Honest, I'm trying! Don't sick all the gus users on me!
I set up the multiplexing for different sound cards when I rewrote the
sound blaster initialization. Gravis is supposed to be writing the code
for me (I only need three little functions), but if I had known it was
going to take a week, I would have just had them send me the docs and I
would have done it myself...
Note: this will only work on ultrasound max and ultrasound PNP, not the
original ultrasound, which does not have autoinit dma support.
I really hope it makes it for the upcoming release.

so this means gus users with the original gus _will not_ have sound
present in quake?

Just like people with SB less than version 2.0 will not have sound either.
>
It appears that way..I'm hoping it will change though..
Not going to I bet. You see, they tried to fit the orginial GUS
into the same model as the SB in Doom II, remember how shitt that sounded?
Well, since the PnP and the MAX have a seperate channel for audio streams
(not Midi from RAM), they can fit into that Model. It would require iD
to do a major rewrite of the sound model they have inorder to support
a soundcard that (with all the PnP's, MAx's and GUS's) is about 5% of
the soundcard market. :( Mind you, I have a MAX, so I don't mind so
much.
Besides all the technical reasons why it would be terrible for
them to make it work with the first GUS, are you complaining that
Quake won't run on a 386? Not to be mean, but the GUS is pretty
old, about as old as the SB (not pro). Things change, you
have to spend money. It sucks, but so do computers....

Perfect Stereo sound in Quake 1.0 , using my GUS PnP. I do have to exit to
MS-Dos mode (when are those version 2 drivers coming out?!?), in which Quake
automatically supports the GUS PnP.

Wouter, get real, a dos game is a dos game and not a windows 95 game!
Quake is probably written in protected mode and will never run in a
dosbox for any soundcard whatsoever, and so it won't with the gus
either, no matter what driver revision. Let's say that the chances
are unlilkely, to say the least ;-) In any case, it would always run
faster in dos, should it ever be able to run in windoze.
Sorry man, but you're talking out your arse. It runs PERFECTLY in a DOS
Windows under both Win95 and OS/2 Warp 3.0 (and Warp 4.0 beta :> ).
Full sound, everything.
Please, stop giving incorrect information, and READ THE FUCKING
DOCS!

HOW!!! i have GUS PnP and it has 2 MB on it... the thing locks up when
i run quake!! V1.0 and 1.01 both were doin it...
You could run the setenv.bat batch-file, which will set the ultrasnd variable
for you...
Good luck and have fun...

Close, but not all the story. Other variables are used to detect the MAX
and PnP. Read on ....
===================================================
UltraSound MAX and UltraSound PnP Support for Quake
===================================================
Before running Quake, make sure that your sound card works and your
environment variables are set correctly.
Other UltraSound Cards (ACE & Classic)
--------------------------------------
These drivers are not for the UltraSound ACE or UltraSound Classic
sound cards. We have heard mixed reports that MegaEm or SBOS
have a chance of working with the UltraSound Classic but there is a
short sound F/X delay.
UltraSound PnP and PnP Pro
--------------------------
You must make sure that you do NOT have IWSBOS or MegaEm loaded.
Setup
-----
Quake will automatically detect that the UltraSound Max or PnP
are installed. It does this by looking at the SET INTERWAVE (PnP)
and SET ULTRA16 (Max) environment variables.
Quake will use the settings found on the SET ULTRASND/ULTRA16 (Max)
and in the IW.INI (PnP) file to determine what port settings to use.
Troubleshooting Windows 95 (DOS Box)
------------------------------------
We recommend that you restart your computer in MS-DOS Mode. DOS Box
may or may not work, so use at your own risk.
Hope this clears it up.

?????????????????????????
I have downloaded the most recent Quake version so far (v1.01) and it
DOES NOT support GUS directly!!!!!!
Of course, it works with SBOS, but it sounds like crap...
SO....???? What?????
Medve (me...@omk.omikk.hu)
Worked for me on my GUS-PNP and no special things had to be done.
Maybe your trying to run it under Win95?
I haven't been able to get Quake 1.0 to work on Gus Max in Dos (no Win95
on this machine). It will run with sound if I use maxsbos or sbos and
take out the ULTRA16 environment variable. What should the ULTRA16 read?
The one I have reads SET ULTRA16=32C,0,0,1,0 and SET ULTRASND=220,7,6,7,5
The machine I'm running on is Intel P100 on ASUS Triton II chip set with
8meg Non-parity ram. I did try 32meg parity ram, but they didn't help.
Version 6.22 Dos if it makes any difference.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Robin
Hmmm, okay.
ULTRA16 will be slightly different for everyones machine, but it is
generally of the form :-
ULTRA16=xxx,0,0,1,0
where xxx is either 32C or 34C. It can be other values, I am just
quoting the most common values used.
The xxx states the I/O port of the CODEC. This is the part that Quake
needs to play sounds. Ultrasound Classics do not have a CODEC, so are
not supported by Quake. Interesting thought: has anyone got it working
with the 16-bit daughter card on a Classic? This may work, I guess,
because it endows the Classic with a CODEC.
The variables should be set before the call to ULTRINIT in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT files, because ULTRINIT uses the environment variables to
configure your GUS.
The settings for the environment variable are determined via the setup
program in the ULTRASND directory. This will test the ports, irqs, dmas
to make sure they are okay.
I advise you re-run this setup program, and check that the CODEC port
you have selected passes the test. This will hopefully bring up any
clashes. If it fails, pick another address.
Make sure all the other parameters pass the tests.
Do you have your printer port enabled? I say this because the primary
IRQ you have chosen is 7, which is normally LPT1's IRQ. You could try
disabling your printer port in your BIOS, or try moving the first IRQ to
a different value. You could try :-
SET ULTRASND=220,7,6,5,5
SET ULTRASND=220,7,6,5,10
or similar.
I would favour the first one (with both on IRQ 5). I have both of mine
on my GUS PnP on IRQ 7, because I have an SB16 on 5. And I have disabled
my printer port in my BIOS, to avoid any potential problems.
Presumably, the IRQ is relevant to the CODEC in some way, so that DMA
can be accurately controlled. I'm not sure on this, though.
Hope this helps some,

I had the sae problem... just make sure you have ultrinit of version

Oh, yeah, GUS classic doesn't have autoinit dma support ??????
John, take a look at the GUS docs, it's all described there. You need a
few more lines of interrupt code, but autoinit dma works !!!!
What's making ID so lazy these days ? Money ? :)

I have a Gus PnP with 4 mb. with wich it works if i init it with
iwinit -bbios. But it does not work with my GUS MAX :((((
Quake 1.01 detected my GUS MAX with no problems. Stereo sound!
But the sound is a bit choppy in high res modes. On the other
hand, Quake 0.92 with MAXSBOS sounds great (in mono :(), even in
high res modes. SBOS is "crappy", get the latest MAXSBOS from
"http://www.gravis.com/".
Pardon me, but how did you get SBOS to work with Quake? I can't get it to
work. Just freezes after initializing the sound. I've tried so many different
DMA and IRQ settings it's not funny. Lots of SBOS switches too.
Thanks

P.S. GUS ACE here, not the original GUS.
P.P.S. I think I'll cry now. How can id do this?
I have a Gus Pnp that works great with quake. I've use both iwsbos and
the
native pnp support in the latest version. I have never had problems.

I have gotten Quake 1.01 and the previous versions to work with my
GUS Max, I had to use Maxsbos instead of sbos.. Here is a big hint to
get sbos emulations (including Maxsbos) to work with games that use
dos4gw.. Set the Midi/sb interrupt to 7 and the gravis interrupt to 5,
this will get around the trashing of interupts above 7. Good luck, BTW version
1.01 of quake does not work with my GUS max either.. Have tried lots of
different settings.. I really hope that they can get it working, SB emulation
takes alot out of the CPU, which could be going to make my fps faster..
>Gus PNP. iwsbos, P5-133, 16MB (alloc 13MB under DOS, 8MB under win95)
>Quake 1.01, Matrox Millenium 2MB.
Actually, Marcel, you shouldn't need iwsbos to make it work(they
specifically say NOT to use it). It seems however that the Gus
drivers in general on Quake 1.01 are still seriously buggy (ID
software say so themselves in the textfile coming with the
shareware-version). I can get it to work up here on my gus p'n'p, but
only when I set some parameters and the samplerate to 11khz (if I set
it higher sound gets really strange).
Try "SET ULTRA16=" in dos. This will trick Quake into not detecting Gus
Max.. That's how I got mine to work. Anyway, Quake will detect my Gus
Max without emulation, but no sound would come out.. Even if I turn up
the speaker all the way, all I hear is very little noise. What's strange
is if I'm in dos and turn up speaker all the way, I hear pretty loud
noise.. Oh, well..
Robin
On my system, I get sounds with my PnP ok, but they are played at least
twice as fast as normal - nice Mickey-mouse grunts...hehehe
> robi...@mail.vividnet.com (Robin Chen) wrote in article
<4t9eu6$4...@cancer.vividnet.com>...
It seems that the Gus Max has compatibility with newer PnP BIOS. I just
switched my Gus from ASUS Triton II motherboard to an old no-name Pentium
board, and everything works out fine.
