Can anybody supply any info on the Ensoniq AWE32 PnP or the Audio PCI. I
have been looking into these, and can't find any real good information n
the AWE, and was wondering if it was an olde version of the Soundscape VIVO
90 or the Soundscape Elite. Any information would be greatly
appreciated...

Splash,

Ensoniq has finally gotten it's Audio PCI card on it's webpage at
www.ensoniq.com. (Or go directly to www.audiopci.ensoniq.com.) I have an
Audio PCI installed on my computer at home and it is a superb card,
however, there is a problem with the card conflicting with certain video
cards. This conflict causes an annoying "blip" during MIDI playback
while drawing hi-res graphics. I got the manufacturer of my computer
(Cyber Max) to look into the problem with Ensoniq. Here's a copy of the
memo my Cyber Max Tech Support representative sent to me:

Hello,

We are still working on your problem! We have seen some other new
systems with the same problem that you are having!

Here is a memo that our TECHNICAL SPECIALIST GROUP (TSG) mad up
about this problem: (I thought you might be interested)

-Related HARDWARE: SND-ENSAPCI
-Related SOFTWARE: Internet Explorer, Media Player
-Operating System(s): Windows 95
-Other Keywords: Midi, Scrolling

PROBLEM:
============
When playing a Midi file (.MID) or Midi Format file (.RMI, etc.) and scrolling
through a WebPages (Internet Explorer or Netscape) or a document
(WordPad) you here a scratchy or beeping noise interfering with
playback of midi file.

CAUSE:
=========
At this point our Engineering department are looking into this problem. The
problem appears to dependant upon the video card and video card driver.
This problem is known to occur with the following video cards
(VGA-MYST/xSGM, VGA-MILL/xWM, VGA-VRGVX/xVS,
VGA-VRGVX/xVD, VGA-VRG3D/xED). This problem has not been seen
to occur with the (VGA-ET6000/xMJ) card. This problem has also been
noted when just moving the windows on the desktop around.

SOLUTION:
==========
A system has been sent to Ensoniq, which exhibits this problem, and they
should have a solution shortly. They have been very fast in responding
to problems with the AudioPCI drivers and they should do the same with
this issue. In the meantime, the only known solution is to bring the
graphics down to 640x480 @ 256 colors or to lower the graphic
acceleration 2 notches.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The product codes mentioned in the memo refer to the following video
cards: Matrox Mystique, Matrox Millenium, Diamond Stealth 2000 and 3000,
and the STB Velocity 3D...these are the cards offered by Cyber Max so
there may be more cards that cause the problem. I've got the video
hardware acceleration down on my computer two notches and it eliminates
the problem as mentioned in the memo. Of course, this is not a
satisfactory solution since there is no reason why the sound card
shouldn't work properly...but it is a temporary solution.

I must stress that despite this problem, the Audio PCI is an excellent
card with a number of high end features: excellent wavetable synthesis;
chorus, echo, and reverb effects; and the ability to load new wavesets.
What really sets the card apart from other ISA cards with similar features
is it's use of system memory. The Audio PCI uses system RAM to store
samples, as opposed to the Sound Blaster 32 which has it's own onboard
memory...this makes expansion of the Audio PCI virtually unlimited (to the
amount of system memory on your computer of course).

For more detailed specifications, you can check out their website. Hope
this information is useful to you.
