Well the long awaited DSP Factory Card Arrived, a Yamaha 02R on a
card, the ad says, well spec wise its actually an 03R, (dunno where
the 02 bit comes from) but with out the ins / outs. Well the long and
short of it was that it is to mixing desks what Rice Crispies are too
Breakfast Cereal, Full off snaps, crackles and pops. This is with
Cakewalk + the DSP Factory upgrade. Huge response delays to vol /pan
changes (though its done by hardware???) I'm sure this is cureable
Using a demo version of Quartz Studio Pro it performs much better, but
how or why anyone would use this software is beyond me. I'll have to
test out the Dynamics on my friends 03, these ones seem to tear and
distort quite easily, it may be the extreme settings I tested with,
but I don't remember my ProMix doing this.
HOWEVER. The main problem comes that in all software, chans 3 and 9
crackle considerably, making them unuseable, I hope that is just that
I got a bad card, cos this is really the answer to a PC Studio dreams,
you aint never going to get 40 X 4 Band EQ's + 20 Compressors + 2
'Quality' FX etc on a PC in plugin software. Anyway 6 hours testing
and now the card will have to go back for a replacement / refund.
After the bullshit I discovered with the SB Live not reacting to Pan
messages correctly, I am not a happie Chappie, but as Faith no more

In the unlikely event that anyone else actually owns one of these
cards yet, I attached a cakewalk bundle file (cakewalk 7.01 + dsp
upgrade available from web site) that maybe you could test on your
card and see if chans 3 & 9 crackle for you (350k) posted to

wrong ng I know I'm tired)

I think that DS2416 support under Cakewalk is not yet very well implemented.
You can access DSP Factory effects, dynamics and eq. but it doesn't support
direct access to faders, pans, aux sends, buses yet (somebody correct me if
I am wrong). Those are handled by your host cpu (not DS2416 DSP cpu) so
your DS2416 is behaving just like a usual wave driver sound card.

I don't have those problems, I use them with mics, guitars, almost anything
and they behave just fine.

Ok, now, this is really weird. Those crackles under chans 3 and 9 can't be
caused by a hardware problem. They are VIRTUAL channels, all the mixing is
made using the DSP cpu. That means is software what actually takes up all
the mixing. The software application sends audio data to the wave driver,
DS2416's cpu receives the data and processes it in real-time, adds effects,
perfoms eq, dynamics, mixes data with audio from other channels and then
sends it to the output, either D/A converter or s/pdif interface. As you
see, crackles could be caused by D/A converter but that would make crackles
in every channel not just 3 and 9.
Before you take the card back to the shop I'd recommend going to:
http://www.c-mexx.com/webnew/downloads/download.htm
download C-Console V1.0 for DSP Factory demo and play around with it and
Cakewalk for a while.

I couldn't find that attachment but, anyway, I've been working with my
DS2416 card for nearly two months now and it's GREAT!!. I purchased
C-Console and (although it has some minor bugs) I use it along with
Samplitude or any sequencer with no problems at all.

If my memory serves me the mixing algorithm of Cakewalk doesn't
take care of overflow which will cause such crackle when bit range
is exceeded. So lower the volume for those channels and try again.

No the problem happens in all software, and ONLY on those 2 chans,
when all chans are set the same, Cakewalk may well make it worse
