Hello,

The Yamaha DB50XG and Roland SCD-15 daughterboards seem to be the
better wave-table players around.

- Which of the 2 would someone buy and why, in terms of sound
quality, in terms of functionality ?

Many thanks,

This question as old as time is easily answered by looking
at current support from the companies -- Roland has abdicated
the PC sound card market, while Yamaha continues to product
and/or distribute stuff. I'd go with the DB50XG because:

1) it has more instruments
2) it has more/better effects
3) it's XG compatible -- check the XG home page, below
4) it has better sound editing capabilities (check out Gary
Gregson's XG Edit -- pretty amazing).

If you don't do any composing at all, and just want really
good sounding instruments, however, you might want to look
into the Roland board, since it does sound a bit better.

Hi !
I think Roland's melodic patches are more realistic, but Yamaha has much
more powerfull sound processing and more sounds. Also XG standart beats
Roland GS with it's functionality. In short, i chose Yamaha !

Both DB50XG and SCD-15 are good choice. Which one is better depends on
what you need. DB50XG has more instruments, sound editing capability, and
effects. SCD-15 has more support and many of its instruments sound better
and are crystal clear. If you have enough money, get both. If you have
both you'll hear why DB50XG's GS compatiblity mode will *never* replace a
Sound Canvas and why XG mode has better capatiblity(if only it has better
sound instruments).

Shifting the debate somewhat, how does a Roland SCD-15 compare
to the E-MU 8-MB General MIDI patch set for the SoundBlaster 32?

I would think the SCD is easier to use since it will be plug and play
with MPU401 support in Win or DOS, etc... In terms of the sample
sounds I think the Emu ones are a bit thicker but the Roland FX settings
improve the overall Roland output. IF the Emu default Fx get upgraded
then it would probably be better. However, you need to find what card to
mount the SCD card onto.
