Do any of you know of a Soundblaster-compatible card or even a
multimedia kit with PCMCIA soundcard/CD-ROM interface and drive,
speakers, etc.?

Thanks.

Hi ! I was looking for a SB-compatible PCMCIA-card a few months ago
and I was told that todays PCMCIA-standard doesn't support DMA-channels
and there are no SB-compatible cards on the market.
Is this true?

Actually, I know Turtle Beach makes one and I have seen others in magazines.
I cant remember the names of any of them but the prices seemed to hover
around $225. The August edition of Computer Shopper has ads for them.

New Media makes .WAVjammer PCMCIA soundcard and the MultiCombo card
which is is the .WAVjammer and BusToaster(SCSI) combined. They are supposed
to be SoundBlaster compatible but I haven't verified it. Media Vision also
makes a PCMCIA soundcard. I think it is supposed to be soundblaster comp-
atible. They also make a Reno cdrom with PCMCIA SCSI card in a multimedia
kit(I don't think it has a sound card though).

WARNING WARNING WARNING

Media Vision's Sound Blaster "compatibility" is through a
protected-mode TSR that is incompatible with protected-mode
software...ie: Doom, Heretic, Descent. Also, the 16bit Windows
drivers are incompatible with Win95 and Media Vis considers making a
Win95 driver a "low priority"

If someone knows of a work-around or fix for these problems, I'd
appreciate hearing about it. Meanwhile, I'm looking to replace my
Media Vision PCMCIA sound card.

My friend had a .WAVjammer and has failed to play the sound effects
for DOOM no matter what he did.

Since I am not that much of a techy, I'm not sure what fully SB compatible
means, but I can tell you to stay away from .WAVjammer if you want to
play doom with that awesome supershotgun sound.

Also, this may be a really dumb question but, can someone please tell
me how much difference does a SB16 make over SB8? Sound quality?
and how about the amount of memory required for the drivers?

Thank you :)

Jeff, IBM just announced a new WAVETABLE PCMCIA sound card based on their MWAVE
DSP chip, which enables you to get both sound effects AND music.

it is called the 3D PCMCIA Sound Card, and can be purchased from IBM Direct for
$299 U.S.

I just ordered one but won't get it for another week or so.
When I get it, I might write a review.

Hope this helps,
