I recently purchased a synth Roland XP-30. Working in local mode it sounds
and works great! but I have a nasty problem working with in multitimbral
mode with my PC and Cubase.

I connect MIDI in and out to the connectors out and in in my SB Live!, I
enter Cubase, load a song, and I put the synth in GM mode. It works great.
But then I put the synth in performance mode and I configure the patch for
each part. Then when I press a key, the sound starts sounding and never
stops, and both Cubase and the XP-30 hang until I switch off this! Looks
like if note-on message were detected, but not note-off. This works if I set
local off in the XP-30, but I'd like to play a part while the sequencer
plays the rest of the song.

Is this correct? What am I doing wrong? Could it be a problem with MIDI
cables? I am using the mini-din MIDI connectors in the full SB Live! Would
it be better to use the joystick MIDI connector? Do I need a better MIDI
interface? Would it be better to use the computer connector in the XP-30 and
the serial port in my PC using the right cable?

I am really upset with this problem so any suggestion would be very
appreciated. Please forward them also to ism...@lycosmail.com.

Regards,
Ismael

Hi Ismael

I have a XP10 so there's a little difference but not lots.
Have you looked at making sure that the SYSEX is not sending from the
keyboard into the PC and then back to the XP30. This will fill the MIDI
buffers very quickly and cause things to lock up.

In Cubase go to Options

'Midi Filter' Now check the SYSEX parameter. If its already off then I am
not sure what the problem is. Except the keyboard maybe sending out excess
data that is not being used. Also check the Midi Thru option too, try it
without it and see if that works?

Let us know how you get on.

You need to set local off in the XP-30 & MIDI-thru on in Cubase.

Some of you are partially correct, about having Local set to "off" in the XP-30,
but only if thru is "on" in Cubase. But this is not the cause of the hanging midi
notes, believe it or not. There is another parameter in the Global Midi menu of
the XP-30, that needs to be set to "off". It's the parameter called "Remote",
found in the same global midi menu...this parameter needs to be set to "off". Try
it and you'll be amazed!
