Thanks. Also I've seen the AWE32 for 195 and the Gravis for 145.
Tell me if you can get better prices then that.

Neither.
You should be comparing the Non-Pro Gravis with the SB32.
Market prices for SIMM's and microphones make the Gravis Pro uncompetitive
with the plain model; you can add these for less than the price difference.
Similarly, a daughterboard on a full-featured synth is going to be in most
cases overkill, so it doesn't seem likely the price premium required for
the WaveBlaster connector and ASP, which has seen very little application,
is very compelling.
I would venture that the SB32 is the better buy for you based on the way
you presented your question. It is the easier card to use.
I much prefer the GUS because I like the philosophy behind its design and
because I have certain skills and a temperment which allow me to use it
effectively. Your preemptive refusal to define your needs suggests to me
that you probably don't. Either that or you work for the CIA. :-)

I paid $125 at retail for my Gravis non-Pro back in January (NCA's Palo
Alto, CA store). I added a 4MB SIMM for $80 back then. I don't have a
microphone.

Dunno. I haven't looked lately.

I had a Gus Classic too, and upgraded to a SB32PnP, added 2 megs and
I can say that:
- The sound is enhanced with the effects (chorus, reverb)
- The Midi is much better! Even with the ROM patches (only 1Mb) the
midis sound better here than with the GUS classic
- I can hear MODS, S3M, XM, etc with chorus&reverb !!!! You must add
RAM for this. Incredible!
- ALL games work great, no problems with compatibility! Great music on
games on AWE mode thanks again to the chorus&reverb.
But, That's only my advice...

I think the Question here was the differences between the GUS PNP
(Pro) and the Sound Blaster AWE32, NOT the GUS Classic and the
AWE.
The Gus Classic is an old product now However the PNP is much
better can be upgraded to 8mb of ram with a total of 8.5 mb on the
PNP (Pro) .
Effects like Chorus - Reverb - Flanging - ect... is all there buit into the
IW chip.
Now the 1 mb ROM does also sound good and whats even better
you can combine the ram and the rom to produce excellent midi.
Gravis also improved on the SB Compatibility mode called iwsbos
and also has support for Roland MT32 and GMIDI
Over all I think the PNP card has a great future as develepors create
new and exciting Software ecpecially native support for the IW chip
with GAMES.Cant wait ;-) , ( right now you can still use the PNP as
a gus with no problems at all)
Cheers.

If the MIDI really is better, that would be wonderful.
It's the game thing that is making me consider the move. Thanks for
the positive reinforcement ;-)
