I am looking for 17inch monitor to use XFree86 with my Gateway DX/33
system which has a WDC9031 video adaptor. As far as I understand,
NEC 5FG has a very good reference in terms of its quality. But, it is
still expensive. The new Viewsonic 17 seems to have better specifications
than NEC 5FG and cheaper. If anybody had experience with these monitors,
I'd like to know his/her experiences and suggestions. Thanks in advance.

The Viewsonic 17 is one of the best 17" monitors I've looked at. If
it had been on the market when I bought my 5FG, it would have been a
tough decision. Highly recommended.

How effective is an anit-glare screen for the NEC 5FG.

I just saw a NEC 5FGe running windows (only at 800x600 ) and it was
great. But the glare is very noticable, no matter what background and
colors I tried.

I have the Multisync Monitor Lens on my NEC 5FG right now and the glare is
virtually gone under normal office fluorescent lighting but brightness is
reduced, of course. In all, I prefer the separate monitor lens to the usual
etched or mica-coated screens that other manufacturers use to reduce glare
because the OCLI 62% transmission glass used in the lens is optically
nondistorting, so there is no loss of sharpness.

The best way to control glare is to control the lighting environment, which
is what I do. Took a look at any properly designed CAD room to see how
this is achieved.

If you cannot control your lighting conditions and are bother greatly by
glare, you might be better off with a Nanao or Viewsonic, both of which
have anti-glare processing applied to their tubes.

Well, does anybody know of any mail order company that sells 5FG (not 5FGe)
NOW? I have called a few, and they all are out of 5FG. But they do carry
5FGe. Has 5FGe replaced 5FG permanently?
BTW, I had a Nanao F550iW for a week, but I had to return it.
In short, it stinks! It had a major focus problem between center and edge
of the screen, slowly moving image (it turns on with image 1/4 inch off to the
right, and then moves back slowly to the position I have saved as the tube
gets warmed up).
It did have a sharp and well focused image at the center of the screen,
but IMHO it didn't deserve the high magazine ratings.
Also, I know of one other person who has the same problem with his Nanao,
so I guess my monitor is not the only bad one in a million.
Anyway, I returned the Nanao for an exchange with Viewsonic 17 since the
they didn't carry 5FG which was my next choice.
I don't know what to do next if Viewsonic doesn't meet my expectation.
