The CMOS battery on my DFI G586IPC motherboard has failed. On this
motherboard the battery is part of an 'ODIN' chip that includes the RTC and
other components in a single chip/package.

Right next to the ODIN chip is an undocumented jumper, JP8. Does anyone
know if this jumper allows the use of an external CMOS battery? I've
e-mailed this question to DFI tech support but have not yet received a
reply.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi..

NO! The odin chip is a 'copy' of the Dallas semiconductor DS1287 RTC/SRAM chip.
You should be able to buy a DS1287 (or 1287A) from any decent electronics
spares place and plug it in (they're the same pin-out). The DS1287 does *NOT*
have facility for external battery input.
