Hello,
A friend om mine got hold of an IBM PS/2 model 80, dated 1988. When
booted, it displays a memory test (6 MB, OK), accesses the floppy
drive once, then beeps twice and displays "165", then dies.
The hard-disk is never accessed.
Apparently the power-on diagnostics have detected something amiss, and
this code is the only thing it is willing to tell. Since the machine
was given away sans manuals, sans diskettes, etc, the question is of
course:

What does code 165 mean, and what can we do about it?

Replies via E-mail to ruu...@wab-tis.rabobank.nl please, as I do
not normally read this group.

Thank you,
Ruurd Beerstra.

: Hello,

I think it means someone pulled an adapter out and did not rerun the
reference disk. Find a reference disk.

I have received many replies, a big *Thank You* to all who
took the trouble. The problem was that the CMOS settings were
not correct (dead battery). A reference diskette took
care of that. The machine is now up and running.

Thanks again,
Ruurd.

The 165 is an adapter mismatch error. Probably an adapter was removed
from the machine prior to it being given away. Yoy may be able to press
F1 and continue past the error. However, the real answer is that you
need to get a reference diskette for a Model 80. Ideally you should try
to get your hands on the reference diskette and the backup reference
diskette for this machine. If that is not possible, I believe there
is some info in the PS2 FAQ about how to get copies from IBM. Place the
disk in the floppy drive and boot the machine. Then just follow the
prompts.

STOP!! Just because your mobo supports the dx4-100 does NOT mean it
supports the 120.

1. who makes the mobo?
2. what BIOS does it have and date?
3. does it have jumpers for voltage or does it autosense the voltage?
4. does it support 40MHz CPU speed?
5. Is it a VLB or PCI Mobo? does it support wait states on the bus?

I have spent a LOT of time with this chip and only certain boards
really support it.

I'll be happy to help.

The reason is probably that the battery has died, so you will need
a new battery as well.

You must set the clock at 40 MHz,3 x clock multiplier and 3.3Volt.
you must set the jumpers for amd enhanced dx/dx2/dx4 writ back on your board.
The amd 120 is a enhanced cpu,but this is not written on the cpu!
I have tested my comp.and he is faster the a pentium 75 ! (8 Mb)
I have tried 3 differend boards,and now I have a nameless board.
