I am planning on purchasing a monitor within a week. I have been reading
this newsgroup and reviews on the web. I don't have the $ for a flat CRT
monitor like the Sony F400, Nec F950, Mitsubishi Diamond Pro Flat 900u,
etc. But I can cough up the $ for the best regular CRT monitor. Now I
need to choose between aperture grille or shadow mask.

Aperture Grille:
The best one of these seems to be the Sony 400PS. But with aperture grill
monitors in general, just how bad are those 'lines' caused by the damper
wires? Are they that visible and noticeable? I know the lines are less
visible in games, but are the lines more visible when using MS Office or IE
(productivity applications)? I don't think I want to stare at two permanent
horizontal lines on the screen. Is the Sony 400PS truly the best one here?

Shadow Mask:
If the aperture grille lines are that bad, then I'd be interested in a
shadow mask monitor. Which one is the best one of these? From what I've
read, the Hitachi 751-753 seem to be the most highly recommended.

Thanks for any help.

The 400PS costs about the same as the cheaper flat CRTs ( Mitsubishi,
Iiyama, NEC )

Almost invisible unless they are against a flat one colour background.
Even then, unless you look for them ( ie know that they are "supposed to
be there" ) you could easily miss them.

more visible against a plain white background. But they are very faint.
Actually, I bet you've already seen a trinitron and never noticed (-;

Besides the flat aperture grille models, the general concsensus would
be "yes"

To anyone that dont buy monitor because of the damper wire, do you also
shy from trinitor TV because of the damper wire?

Myself I only 'see' those wire when I'm looking for them.... My wife hated
me
when I showed her those wire on sony TV because she would alway see them
after that.. but she forgot now :) Time to go remind her ;)

Personally, I don't like the Trinitron monitor because of the wires. They
will show up mostly when you have a White background, like when you are
using Word or Excel. They do not bother some people, but do others. I
would go into a store and get the salesman to put something with a white
background for you to look at. You'll have to judge it for yourself.

I love the Viewsonic PS-790 that I have. Iiyama, and Hitachi were also
contenders when I bought this in October.

I'm very pleased with my Viewsonic G790. .26dp shadow mask 1600x1280
resolution. About $450 from buycomp.com or computers4sure.com.

The TV rarely displays large areas of flat colour, and your eyes are
rarely within 1 meter of it. This in itself makes a big diff.

>Myself I only 'see' those wire when I'm looking for them.... My wife hated

ditto (-;

btw, I still agree that it's a non issue. But it's slightly more of a
non issue with a TV than a monitor.

I just got an ADI G66 which is their new shortneck 19" and so far it's
wonderful.

Problems with Sony TV's are fairly common; check out the frequent complaints
on the appropriate newsgroups for more info.

STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM SONY AS POSSIBLE!!!!!!!

I have Sony TV's throughout my house, and a Sony 15" monitor. I purchased a 400
PS 4 weeks ago. The text is just plain poor.

The monitor "died" last Saturday. I called Sony. Sure they will fix it. But
they only have about 4 or 5 places in the US where they can fix them. And they
wanted me to pay shipping!!

I paid $650 for the monitor, and I was quoted almost $100 to send the monitor
and have it insured. It was going to Maryland somewhere.
My warranty from the store indicated that SONY was firm that only they could
touch the monitor during the warranty period.

I took the monitor back and just got a refund. If you buy any monitor, get a
Best Buy type warranty. Back to the store for an exchange. Period. Sony stinks.
I have a $1,800 trinitron TV that went out after a year and a half and the
servicing company told me that sony knew they had bad solder joints but aren't
standing behind the product. It cost me $300 for the repair.

Sony is just plain junk. I've been down the road with them, and never again. I
would go with the Hitachi, etc. but GET THE WARRANTY THAT ALLOWS AN IN STORE
EXCHANGE or you could find yourself out a ton of money and time for shipping.

After much shopping and comparison my wife and I both selected the Hitachi
19" monitor. We are both extremely happy with its image quality and the
convenience of its controls.

The wires, on Sony 15" + 17" monitors are MUCH more noticable, than on their
19" monitor - I'm typing right now on a white background, and I can barely
see them at all. (they are very thin on the 19")

What a bunch of hog shit!!!!!! I've used a whole bunch of different sizes +
types of monitors + brands, etc over the years - and the Sony 400 PS is the
best I've seen.

There is ONE reason why your text was poor >>>>>>>> you were using a piece
of shit video card.

Try the Matrox G200 - EXTREMELY good for 2D.

I have the 400 PS, it is great... those 2 tiny lines are VERY hard to notice
(don't bother me at all, and I'm really picky).

You know, honestly, the only time I've ever noticed the white lines on
my 400PS, was when reading the NG's when people ask are they bad.
Then I actually look for them. Otherwise, never.

Oscar,
What kind of BNC cables did you use? I tried some on mine, but it
didn't make much difference, if any. These were cheap Chinese cables
though. Wondering if a better quality would make a difference.

BNC doesn't look better than D-Sub for me either. (only the elimination of a
pass through cable makes BNC worth while)

That's why I did it as well. Though I switched back because I didn't
notice a difference, and I got tired of having to hit the Input button
on my monitor to switch back and forth between sources.

I noticed a huge difference, with the V2 pass through being eliminated!

You're right! I have a 1983 Sony 19" Profeel TV that still works perfectly
and has never needed service... and a 1996 27" XBR Trinitron that died one
year after the sale. Old Sony products are great... the new ones suck! I
would never buy a Sony monitor or TV again. The company has rested on its
reputation for a long time now and their quality has diminished over the
years.
