Is there any way I can disable device dependent bitmaps and use device
independent bitmaps system-wide? I have certain apps that give me a choice,
but how do I disable or enable them within Windows 98? I have a Riva128
graphics card.

Thanks,
Steve

That's pretty much an application specific issue, if a program asks
for a device dependent bitmap and it gets a dib instead there are
going to be problems. Ditto the other way around.

First of all: It's not possible. If an application asks for an device
dependant bitmap and receives one of another type everything could
crash. It could be possible if the drivers would have support for it,
but there is absolutely no reason why such a feature is needed.

Secondly: What use can you think of to disable Device Dependant Bitmaps?

I want to disable DDBs because when I use gamma correction with my riva128
based board in 32-bit color, I get weird artifacts in the bitmaps. Kind of
like vertical lines with a posterization effect. Does not happen if I use
DIBs. But some apps don't let me choose, and just use DDB's... maybe I
should get a new video card. What's a fast 2D PCI-slot board to use with a
P133?

Umm, well, I realize you may not want to hear this, but "fast" and "P133"
aren't exactly synonymous. Maybe you might want to consider a P233 MMX can
be picked up new these days for ~$50, or if you really want to see fur fly
(or you have a mobo that does not provide dual voltage), an IDT Winchip2 or
a Rise processor could go right in there for about twice as much (what a
difference, though!) How about a nice Voodoo3 PCI to go with that processor
upgrade? BTW, DDB's or DIB's are an application-dependent thing. So forcing
use of one or another will not be good. If the application gets along with
the video driver, fine, if not, perhaps upgrading your video driver to the
latest and/or greatest would be the thing to do. One good source of Riva
128-pertinent info can be found here: http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/ .

This should be a bit more helpful than Bigbootey.

The Virge/VX is a really lousy 3D chipset, but it's very nice for 2D.
I used to scroll around 10-15MB images in PhotoPaint with an STB
Velocity 3D (based on Virge/VX) with no problems at all on a P133. You
can probably pick up a Virge/VX-, GX-, or DX-based card really cheaply.
