Hi,

I've been having debilitating chronic daily headaches for the past 17
months. I bought an LCD monitor almost 4 months ago. My headaches have gotten
better but I still get daily headaches even though I'm using LCD.

I'm possitive that they are
from the monitor because I can see an immediate effect. I start getting a
headache about half an hour after looking at my LCD screen. When I take a
break away from the monitor for about an hour the headache goes away. The
days I don't use the computer at all I feel like a millions bucks. Looking
at the screen gives me eye pain sometimes. I don't wear glasses and I don't
have a problem with my eyesight. Now I use sunglasses while using the
computer which has help a bit. I also have most of my system colors altered
so that I type on a gray background instead of white and I have the
brightness and contrast to the minimum.

What else can I do? I want my life back. I've been getting daily headaches
for a year and a half now. I can't stop using computers because I'm a web
designer and even if I moved out of that area the Internet has become my
life.

Could it be that I need a better video card? My LCD monitor is not TFT.
Could it be that I need TFT? Are there any other alternatives?

Please someone help me. I'm willing to pay anything to get my life back.

Thanks,
Sarah

Hi,
What exact LCD monitor -manufacturer and model?

Actually the Windows green standard background is supposed to be good
for the eyes.

Bad choice I think to use LCD monitor for webdesign, at least the
graphics part (pictures etc). LCD monitors are not so good as ordinary
monitors regarding colors.

Why not get a good 17, 19 or 21 aperture grille based monitor?

What graphics card do you use?

>My LCD monitor is not TFT.

Hm... have you seen a "TFT" LCD screen? Have a look at some computer
store and compare to the LCD you use.
But no TFT LCD can beat a very good ordinary monitor regarding image
quality if also a good graphics card is used. That is my opinion. I
have used both 15 inch(Acer f51) and 18 inch(Nokia 820L) LCD with TFT.

>Could it be that I need TFT?

Yes.

> Are there any other alternatives?

Ordinary monitor.

>Please someone help me. I'm willing to pay anything to get my life back.

So money is no problem then?
I assume you have room on the desktop for an ordinary monitor.
Get a good 21 inch aperture grill based ordinary monitor then and a
graphics card that can produce very good image quality (for example
Matrox G400 or G400 Max, or soon G450).
I use G400 Max. Use 1280x1024 32 bit color 85 Hz vertical frequency to
start with (but you can use 1600x1200 also if you want on a good 21
inch). To enhance videosignal quality you can use BNC monitor cable
also(almost all high end monitors has BNC input connectors).
It will probably be another dimension for you compared to what you use
now...

I use Iiyama Vision Master 502, 21 inch and it is rather good. If you
want Aperture Grille there is a Pro 510 also. Not that expensive.
www.iiyama.com (US site)

But for webdesign a 19 inch is probably enough, even a 17 inch is
enough.

One thing that is important with ordinary monitors is that you use
high enough vertical refresh rate, 85 Hz should be enough for absolute
flickerfree screen. (LCD monitors does not require 85 Hz for stable
screen, 60 Hz is often used and you can see no sign of flicker on LCD
as you can see on an ordinary monitor used in 60 Hz. Just a note.

Good luck!

But have you talked to an eye doctor? I have better than "normal" vision,
20/10 (or whichever way around that goes... better that 20/20 anyway) yet I
was getting headaches from reading and monitors. My doctor prescribed
glasses with a slight magnification but no optical correction.

What has happened in my case is that I still have the excellent vision I had
when I was younger but the eye muscles are now starting to fatigue to hold
focus at a near distance.

I have never seen a non-TFT monitor that I would consider good. TFT is
amazingly sharp. Spend a day or two with a TFT then go back to a good
quality CRT. It takes me a few minutes to get used to the "fuzzy" CRT.

Funnily enough I prefer the colour range and contrast of a CRT and the
"fuzzyness" is actually preferable to me (kind of like anti-aliasing).

Just a guess to add to the already excellent points:

Try placing the monitor just below eye level assuming you are looking
straight ahead with no neck tilt. The top of the screen should be at
eye level so that you are looking downward slightly when viewing. See
if that helps...

Consider very high refresh rates120hz or so with a good video card like a matrox
g400. Then get a high quality 3com elf+vlf radiation screen filter/glare reducer.
If this doesn't help and price is no object consider a high end svga projector
setup and use that as your primary display device.

In article <8qljba$7tt$1...@nnrp1.deja.com>,
Sarah

Go visit your eye doctor, he may be able to help you. Dont fool around

Perhaps you have a bad posture (stress on the neck or back can give
headache), or perhaps are you sitting to close to the monitor (then the
eyes need to accomodate to much which can also cause headache).

A relaxed posture and a font size that you can easily read from say a
meter away might help. For more info on ergonomics see for example

As others have noted, if you have a dual-scan type display you do not have
good quality. Try an active-matrix TFT display- there is no flicker and I
find it much easier on the eyes than a CRT.

You did not state your age, but unless you are young, you may have eyestrain
at monitor viewing distance even if you have perfect distant vision. The
normal viewing distance for a display is also longer than for reading, so
reading correction may not work either.

I measured my eye to display distance while seated at my computer, and took
that to my optometrist. Now I have a pair of glasses optimized for computer
use.

Don't overlook the comments about posture and muscle strain.

Perhaps your headaches are caused by stress from the use of the computer.
Stay away from newsgroups, the flames can give anyone a bad headache.
