My saga:
Installed Win 95, all seemed OK. "Starting Win 95 for the first time" it
said. I was pleased. Next up was a error box saying my video adaptor was
conflicting with another device. I ran the suggested diagnostic help and
it reported that the ET4000 was clashing with the HDD controller - that
both were using IRQ 15. As far as I know, the video card uses NO IRQ,
Besides, it functioned perfectly well for several months under DOS OS/2
and Win 3.1 so I just don't believe it.
Anyway, the help function suggested I change the ET4000's IRQ in the
resources section, sure enough it showed up as IRQ 15, but it reported
that I was not allowed to change the settings for either the ET4000 or
the HDD controller.
Win 95 seemed to work OK anyway, but I was stuck in 16 colour mode at
640X480 and the error appeared every time I started up. Selecting the
other Tseng options made no difference, as did trying standard VGA
modes.
Time for action. I called MS tech support and after waiting on hold for
an hour and a half, got some kid who sounded exactly like the lame
behind the counter kid in the Simpsons, "If I helped you I could get
fired" he said, telling me that later today some other dept would call
to get my credit card detail in order that someone would help me, but
I'd be charged for it because it wasn't technically an installation
problem.
Joy. I have an option to assign IRQ 9 to the ET4000 by changing a jumper
from it's default of NO IRQ. I'm hesitant to do this, mainly because I
just don't believe the problem is due to IRQ conflicts.
Tried running the Tseng drivers that worked perfectly in Win 3.11, but
it reported that it was "unable to write to file {}". Joy.
Tseng don't seem to have a WWW site, and MS customer service are going
to see my worst side when they phone later today. I feel truly shafted.
Aside from the dramas, I like the speed Win 95 has given me, but I write
game reviews for a living and the multimedia glory that is Win 95 just
isn't the same under just 16 colours.
If any one has similar problems and can offer a solution, please e-mail
me or post something here.
FTR, my system is a P90/ 8megs RAM and PCI bus HDD controller.

I have an STB Lightspeed VL card using the Tseng Labs chipset. My card
has the option of using an IRQ but only if I need EGA compatibility.
Otherwise, it doesn't need an IRQ. (This was in my manual.)
I checked in my Control Panel to see if the card was using an IRQ and
it is not. It is however listed in the I/O Ports and Memory areas of
the DeviceManager.
>Tseng don't seem to have a WWW site, and MS customer service are going

I am not sure, but I was under the impression that Tseng Labs makes
just the chipset, not the board. That is why they have no WWW site,
because they do not deal with customer service. They sell their chips
to board manufacturers who place the chips on the boards that specific
company designs, so you really need to find out who manufactured the
video card itself.
BTW, Tseng does have a BBS, though it for driver download only. They
have no messaging system on it.
>FTR, my system is a P90/ 8megs RAM and PCI bus HDD controller.
I don't know much about PCI, but I do recall reading somewhere that
older PCI "standard" was to have each PCI card controlled by an IRQ.
Maybe that is the problem?

There have been numerous people with problems using the Ts4000/w32
chipset and Win95. I have had problems also but not as annoying as
yours. I have a AMD DX4-100 and a NEC 4D monitor with a Dynamite Pro
(4000/w32p) and have had the same problem since the first beta of
WIN95. Under WFWG 3.11 I set the refresh rate with a utility in the
Autoexec.bat file (setcrt.exe) and got a NI 72Hz refresh at
1024x768x256 colors. No problem ... bright clear picture. With WIN95
I do that same thing and get a blurry double image on the screen. I
have to go to the Interlaced 87Hz at 1024x768x67,000 colors to get a
clear screen that flickers under some conditions and won't run games
that are set up for 256 colors. I have had lots of suggestions as to
how to fix it and nothing has worked.

Sure, I feel like a right goose because the solution was so incredibly
easy, but hey, I was trying to follow the path of sensible trouble
shooting, not something as fluky and unlikely as this...
So thanks for all your help, and if your having similar problems you may
want to simply restore default BIOS values too... worked for me.
I have the Stealth 32 VLB and the only way that I can get the higher
refresh rates is to do exactly what you've been doing. Even if you run
SETMODE MONITOR from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, Windows '95 re-initializes
the hardware when it loads it's TSENG.VDD driver ( or so I'm told ).
At this point you have to open a DOS session and run SETMODE, change or
preview a refresh rate, then exit back to Windows. Even then, my screen
alignment is way off, but at least the refresh is fixed.
For now I've gone back to using the Win 3.1 drivers ( STLTH32H.DRV )

I have the same problem with refresh rates. I have a Diamond Stealth

Tseng Labs has released new ET4000/w32p drivers for Win95. I
downloaded them off Compuserve. Not sure if they are on the BBS. The
BBS number, though, is 215 579 7536.

Are they available anywhere on the Internet (p.e. via FTP or WWW)?

If possible, I really want to get it from WWW, ftp or email from you
since I cannot connect to those BBS. Would you tell me some internet
reference or would mail it to me??
Thanks in advance.
Wilfred.
I had problems with this too, and I discovered that this only occurs with
the MONITOR option. The default frequency settings such as "CTX" and
"5FG", etc, work fine. Luckily, my monitor's settings are close to the
NEC 5FG, (except for 1280x1024, which is useless on a 15" monitor anyway)
so I use that, and get nice refresh rates automatically in Win95
What is the filename??
>What is the filename??
W95W32.ZIP
I know you can also find it at wuarchive.wustl.edu in the
/pub/WINDOWS_UPLOADS section (I posted there too).
So here's the question: Does anyone know if the registers, addresses,
interrupts etc. that my current driver uses will work with the ET4000w32
based cards? If you're unsure, does anyone have a number at Tseng labs
I could call? If the answer is yes, are there any ISA bus
ET4000w32 cards you would recommend?
I have also heard that there is a company in Germany that is writing new
drivers to the GSS interface spec. Does anyone have any info or
experience with this? If I could get a driver for a Diamond Stealth or
similar card, I could perk up my system considerably.
Thanks!

I am also an user on both Win95 and W32P (a Taiwan made, manufacture unknow..)
But I just place the SETMODE program under the autoexec.bat and everything
seen to be OK on Win95! THe 800x600 72Hz works fine or else the screen will
shift to one side.
My monitor Sony 15sf is on the monitor lists of WIn95, it is the cause of
the difference?

First, do not use the Diamond S32 Setmode program in CUSTOM mode. Try one of
the monitors in the list (the NEC 4FGe/5FG works for me). This may give you a
little less refresh rate, but it's not as bad as without Setmode at all.

Yes, see above.
BTW, there are new Win95 drivers available from Tseng Labs. My Wintach (v1.2,
mode C16) went up from 61 to 91 by using these drivers instead of Microsoft's
Diamond S32 drivers (I'm still using a Win95 beta, so it may be less of an
improvement in the release version). I found them on Compu$erve, don't know if
they are available on the net somewhere.
I also find Win95 speeds up when using 16 bit color (65.000 colors instead of
256) on my 2Mb card.
Hope this helps,
Paul de Koning
