"Backblaze Drive Stats for 2021" by Andy Klein
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-drive-stats-for-2021/

"In 2021, Backblaze added 40,460 hard drives and as of December 31,
2021, we had 206,928 drives under management. Of that number, there were
3,760 boot drives and 203,168 data drives. This report will focus on our
data drives. We will review the hard drive failure rates for 2021,
compare those rates to previous years, and present the lifetime failure
statistics for all the hard drive models active in our data center as of
the end of 2021. Along the way, we share our observations and insights
on the data presented and, as always, we look forward to you doing the
same in the comments section at the end of the post."

I picked up a pair of WD 14 TB drives for $199/ea just after
Thanksgiving. Storage is finally becoming affordable.

If my local computer store has an 8TB SSD for $1000,
a 14TB won't be that expensive. $2000 ought to cover it.
If your computer has $40000 of RAM in it, you can
afford a $2000 SSD, right ?

The HGST engineers came from IBM.

They arrived in cardboard boxes.

And it took IBM 18 months to design the boxes.

When I checked, WD said they don't make a 14TB SMR drive, so no worries.

Isn't the biggest SMR drive 6 TB ?

That's my understanding. I may have used this pdf doc but when I looked
just now, I see that there are other WD resources that say the same
thing. The Note at the bottom indicates that these are all of the SMR
drives, noting that all other drives are CMR.
