In June, Iomega had a press conference at PC Expo in NYC, where they said
they had a working 200 MB prototype in the R&D lab ... but no plans
whatsoever about marketing it. This is a matter of public record.
This week someone posted an unsubstantiated story, allegedly from a
stockholders' meeting indicating they were going ahead on marketing
such a model.
Draw your own conclusions.

Personally, I don't see the point of a 200MB zip. If you only have
200MB of stuff, using 2 100MB zip disks isn't that big a deal.
If you have alot more stuff, the 1000MB jaz drive is much more
convenient and cost effective. Since the 200MB format would
likely be incompatible with existing zip drives, it could even
create some level of customer backlash.
Zip prices are probably falling because production is catching up
with demand. Also, Syquest, possibly through desparation, has been
dramatically cutting prices on it's EZ drive.

I just got a mail from Syquest's sales division saying their SCSI
version of EzFlyer will be out August-END. Any idea if they will
hold up to that promise. Any idea about pricing ?

Iomega plans portable Zip
By David Morgenstern (david_mo...@macweek.com)
New York -- Iomega Corp. demonstrated today a smaller, internal Zip drive for
portable computers. The drive was
15mm high and will ship in the first quarter of 1997, said Iomega President Kim
Edwards at PC Expo here.
Engineers working on the drive said it will draw the same power as current
portable CD-ROM drives. The mini-Zip
works with the same 100-Mbyte media as desktop Zip drives, but one engineer said
the forthcoming drive will use a
completely new mechanical design: a new motor, smaller integrated circuitry and
different eject mechanism. The drive will have a sheet-metal enclosure for
strength. Pricing has not been set.
Iomega's Edwards said the mini-Zip is the latest of the company's efforts to
"consumerize" its removable-media drive. The Roy, Utah-based company said it has
no takers so far for the OEM device.
He also said Iomega had a 200-Mbyte version of the desktop Zip working in the
labs. The ship date for the higher capacity removable is uncertain, however, and
will be "determined by consumer demand and competitive reaction," Edwards said.
