Greetings,

I recently bought a Side Jr Pro VLB EIDE card with the v2.1A bios and
have problems getting it to work reliably under WFWG3.11.

The board seems to behave OK under plain DOS (well at least it hasn't
burped yet..) but when running Windows it seems to cause the system to hang
from time to time. Sometimes it does this within seconds of loading Windows
and other times you can work for upto 30 minutes and then it hangs. I've
tried the usual things such as changing the BIOS and SYSTEM.INI settings
but nothing seems to work. If I switch the onboard bios off the card works
Ok except of course I can't access the secondary IDE port.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or is this card a waste of time and money!

Thanks
John

Hm, I don't think it's a waste of money. I have it with a 2.0B bios and
it works fine under WfW with all options on. I chose to move card bios to
ram. Make sure all sysBIOS settings concerning HD are off.

Hi,

I'm having strange problems with SIDE Jr Pro (V2.0B Bios) too. Since I
have installed it, my display adapter sometimes looses its resolution.
That is, the screen truns black (sometimes with vertical lines on it) but
the system goes on running. Starting and exiting from a full-screen DOS
session (Win95 or OS/2 Warp) brings everything back to normal. Everything
works fine as soon as I remove my Sound Blaster Pro 2.0. Any clue ?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think using DMA 1 for sound should
cause the EIDE controller to make trouble...

BTW what options do you mean when you say "Make sure all sysBIOS settings
concerning HD are off." ? Everything about HDDs except drive parameters ?

Best regards, JP.

My conifg :

Sound Blaster Pro : DMA1 IRQ7 220H (forgot MIDI address, standard anyway)
Mitsumi CD-ROM : DMA7 IRQ9 340H (on SBP)
Modem : COM3 IRQ5
IO : COM1 & COM2 standard, LPT1 standard
Display Adapter : standard but uses COM4 address (no COM4 used anyway)
SIDE Jr Pro : standard, except LPT1 which I have setup to normal
address (don't remember off hand, but SIDE puts it
somewhere else)

I have tried putting the SBP on IRQ10 (in case of conflict with the
printer port, even if I don't use IRQ7 for printing), no change. Disabled
DMA transfer for Mitsumi, no change either. Same goes for enbling DMA
control on SBP (DMA sharing).

Ditto. I have spent almost all my time outside sleeping hours (and
quite a few of the sleeping hours too) trying to get it to work, sofar
without any success.

This is exactly my symptoms. I have also been running under Windows95
for a while. The only difference seems to be that it almost only hangs
during boot and very seldom at a later stage, that is if the boot went
OK.

I have even seen it hang once under DOS. If running with the system
BIOS on the motherboard everything is fine but then it is not an EIDE
controller but an IDE controller since my motherboard do not support
disks larger than 504 MB.

Sorry but I think I have tried almost everything. I've reformatted my
new harddisk at least five times in the process and I have now
basically given up. I think that the card is a dog that does not work
if you use the on-board BIOS. If anyone has any bright ideas they
would be appreciated.

I had the same problems with an installation and discovered that the
default BIOS location overlapped the video cards (leaked below C800h).
I reset the memory location to CC00 and excluded CC00-CFFF in EMM386
and 386enh sections. User reports no glitches or hangs in the last 2
months.

Hope it helps, but it looks like you have already tried this....
