Hi everyone, I just recently bought a 4.5gig Seagate Cheetah because of
the reports of it being the fastest drive in the world (next to the 9 & 18
gig cheetahs). After installing it I ran Adaptec's Threadmark and ZD's
Winbench and I almost dropped to the floor. The results were SLOWER than my
IDE hdd. Threadmark gave me 4.76 MB/sec and the Winbench Business Diskmark
98 gave me a score of 1640 thousands bytes/sec (slower than a Gateway P266
w/IDE hdd). What gives? Does anyone know why this cheetah is more like a
turtle? My machine is configured as follows:

Pentium-II 300mhz
Abit LX6 Motherboard (v1.1)
64 mb SDRAM
Diamond Viper v330 AGP Video Card
Diamond Monster 3d
Adaptec 2940 UW
Seagate ST34501W Cheetah
Plextor 12/20Plex CD-ROM
USR Internal Courier 33.6k Modem
SoundBlaster AWE64 Gold
-----------------------------------------
Yamaha CDR-400t CDR
Iomega Zip Drive

The CDR and the Zip drive were added after I initialy ran the benchmarks,
after adding those two devices the results stayed the same, so it isn't any
of them. I'm currently running OSR 2.1 w/USB supplement installed. All my
IRQS and DMAS are fine and nothing is conflicting. Someone please help!

First of all, its nice to see that you did some research before putting together
your system. Does your system seem faster? If so, I think I remember something
on Tom's Hardware Guide about a problem when benchmarking the cheetah. As long
as your system feels faster than a similar system with EIDE, you really have
nothing to worry about. Maybe pick up a hard drive only benchmark (I remember
that being at Tom's Hardware Guide also).

good luck
