Hello all together,

I want to use a Wangtek 5150 EQ - Streamer under DOS/Win95.
Because I got this device without any documentation - I have a few
questions:
- What are the functions of the jumpers on the streamer? (not on the
controller-card) What are the default settings?
- What drivers I need for DOS/Win95?
- What backup-software I need for DOS/Win95

hardware-description:
- streamer: Wangtek 5150 EQ ASSY NO. 33632-202 REV.C internal
with
- controller-card: Wangtek ASSY 30631-001 REV.C (FCC-ID: CGC8C2HOST4)

I was told, the settings on the controller must be the following for
operating with DOS/Win95:
I/O-Adress=300h, IRQ=7, DMA=3 (DRQ=3, DACK=3). Is this correct?

TIA for your help...

F'up to comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage

I have many QIC-02 and QIC-36 interface tape drives
and interfaces just like yours,
but I have them on the shelf since they're difficult to use.
(I'm using SCSI interface QIC drives right now since they're
hard enough to use!)

Unix and Linux have built-in native support for the QIC controllers,
but you said DOS and Win-95. Okay, here goes ...

I am unsure I ever knew all the jumpers for the drive or the controller card.
The know that the drive has 4 jumpers for drive-ID select
since the QIC interface allows 4 drives.

I try to answer that later ...

The address, IRQ and DMA must merely agree between the hardware
and the software using it. If other devices are already using
IRQ7 (such as a parallel port), or DMA3 (sound card?)
then you'll need to use an alternate!

There are many ways to use a QIC interface tape drive under DOS and/or Windows.
Either use a driver to make the tape appear as a pseudo-device
for other utilities to use, or use a program that accesses the
tape and controller hardware directly.

- There are drivers that make the tape appear as a device (such as "/dev/ct")
so the Unix-like utilities (such as MKS toolkit) can access the tape.
I'm unsure if these still exist, but my mail alias shows:

tapedisk = Ralph Shnelvar = ral...@tesser.com
# Ralph Shnelvar "We make tape drives work like disk drives"
# President URL: http://www.tapedisk.com

aspitape2 = aspitape2 = 71061...@CompuServe.COM
# Greg Shenaut, CompuServe user id 71061,1324
# shareware: ASPI TAPE, documentation, tests and other stuff

I'm unsure what GNU utilities are appropriate.

- Most tape backups access the tape controller & tape drive directly.
Sytran's Sytos was a popular one for DOS, but I believe that
the product is no longer supported since a series of company mergers
made it all Seagate, who'd prefer you just buy a new tape drive.
A web search found "Seagate Sytos" - perhaps the QIC support remains?
BE CAREFUL when checking for "QIC support" because there are MANY
QIC drives, some with SCSI interface, some with floppy tape interface.
Most programs support the floppy interface since it's the cheapest,
but also the slowest.

I bought the CD version of "NovaBack".
I'm VERY disappointed that it supports so FEW QIC adapters.
Checking their web site
http://www.novastor.com/.
I see
"Supported QIC Tape Drive & Interface List"
SUPPORTED QIC INTERFACES:
FC10 Floppy Controller
Generic Floppy Disk Controller
Conner Disk Controller
GSI Floppy Controller
ExaByte Disk Controller
Iomega Floppy Controller
Colorado Trakker
Pertec Floppy Controller
Microsolutions Parallel Controller
Shuttle Parallel Controller
What's sad is that the CD contains the version for
DOS, Win-3.x, Win-95, Win-NT and OS/2.
I too wanted a program for both DOS and Windows to handle these
old QIC interfaces so I can keep the hardware running.

Also note that you can use tapes of different densities and lengths!
The "6150" tape is the high density, giving 150 meg
The "6250" is a longer high density, giving 250 meg

The Wangtek drive has the same mechanism for different interfaces,
according to
http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~lucien/Test/TEST-HTML/MiscHTML/tape.htm
Wangtek 5150EN "Internal, QIC-36, 18Trk, 150MB"
Wangtek 5150EQ "Internal, QIC-02, 18Trk, 150MB"
Wangtek 5150ES "Internal, SCSI, 18Trk, 150MB"

Thank you for asking the question, for it caused me to correlate information
I already had, and to find new information via web searches.

I wish you luck in getting the drive to run.
Please let me how, because I would like to get mine running too.

This is a QIC-150 Streamer with (I am not 100% sure about this but if
it is a full long 8bit card it is) a PC-36 III Controller Card. (If it
is a small 8Bit Card it can be a PC-02 Controller Crad.

There are no drives for this card at all, what you need is special
software supporting this streamer. AFAIK there is no Win95 software
supporting this card and streamer, for DOS you can use SYTOS or SYTOS
PLUS and if it is a PC-02 Card (but I do not think so) you can try an
older version of Norton Backup or PC-Tools Backup.

Yes, it is the standard for this card in a DOS environment, but you
still do need any backup software supporting this card.

Have used such a streamer for a few yaers myself.

Try Tecmar Technologies

http://www.tecmar.com/

as they produce the drives and sell them to Wangtek as an OEM.

Many thanks for your tips. Checking them all out may take a little time.
I'll inform you whether the drive is running or if I opened up a
"streamer-shelf" as Jeff it owns.;-)

Tecmar's tech support is pretty good in my experience (800-992-9216).
