Are all IDE ATA 100 controllers the same for reliability and
usability ?

Our local Comp-USA carries Maxtor, Comp USA
and SIG brands. It does not carry the Promise brand.

Should I mail order a Promise ATA 100 controller or will
any of them do OK ?

Thanks,
Lynn McGuire

Ignore the troll.

Promise is not the only company that makes ATA-100 controller cards
that work well. Besides their card is buggy under Win2K and the VIA
KT133 chipset.

And ignore the follow-up troll about Intel being the only chipset that
works well. The problem is with Promise, not VIA.

No, VIA chipset mobos have trouble with half of everything.

Are there any other controllers you can recommend, preferrably cheaper ones?

Save hassles and get optimal performance by using Promise.

Nope. Maybe try the SIIG?

(BTW, at $~45.00, how much cheaper are you hoping for?)

But if I were using Windows 2000, an Athlon/ASUS A7V MB, I would not
use the Promise ATA-100 controller. There is confirmed data
corruption when UDMA5 (esp. IBM 75GXP HDs) are spitting data out too
fast to it.

This corruption does not exist under Windows ME or Windows 9x.

Just installed a maxtor ata 100 controller card on a compaq. During bootup
the card bios says "Promise Technologies," so I'm assuming the maxtor is a
rebadged promise card.

Well, the bad thing is that I am running an AOpen MB with a VIA
chipset and a AMD K6-2. I have had massive problems with this
MB while I was beta testing Win2K and in the first beta of Whistler.
But, the MB works OK now with beta 1.4 of Whistler.

So sounds like it could be a TAD dangerous here.

Thanks,

And the SIIG and Comp USA boards look like the Maxtor...

They may all be relabels of the Promise board...

No point in asking this sort of question. His only responses are Intel,
Adaptec, and Promise.

All the add-on EIDE controllers use generic PCI chips by VIA, SiS or ALi.
The Promise label is meaningless, just like "Intel Inside" or "Nike".

So which specific Via, SiS, or ALi chip does Promise use?

And what role does driver quality play in all of this?

Although I like Promise cards, for RAID in W2K, I have been installing
AMI's ata 100 raid cards in W2K systems (AMI cards are W2K certified and
have error logging and rebuilding of drives thru the bios configuration
utility for the raid model). More information at
http://www.ami.com/products/product.cfm?ProdID=110&CatID=5&SubID=14 and
http://www.ami.com/support/doc/Why_AMI_IDE_RAID.pdf for some comparisons and
the price isn't bad either at $90.00.

Hope the info helps...Sci-Fi

If you are using Win2K, VIA KT133-based motherboards and multiple HDs
simultaneously, then avoid the Promise controllers at all cost. This
includes the Promise Ultra 66/100 PCI cards, or even the Promise
ATA-100 controller that is integrated into motherboards (e.g., ASUS
A7V). Under these specific conditions, the Promise controllers will
corrupt your data, cause freezes, and BSODs and Promise tech support
is ignoring the issue. The HPT370 controller is an excellent choice
in this case.

If you are using a 440BX-based system, then the Promise ones are fine.

Nope, it's true. Promise controllers cause DATA corruption under
specific, repeatable situations (i.e., Win2K, multiple UDMA5 HDs on
the Promise controller firing siumltaneously) on KT133 chipset
motherboards:

Promise controllers work well on 440BX systems, and probably
EVERYTHING other than KT133 chipset-based systems. This problem AFAIK
only exists on VIA KT133 chipset motherboards running Windows 2000 and
firing multiple hard drives simultaneously.

All claims are obscure and not entirely clear as to what going on. The
Promise FastTrak100 should be the worst if the claims are true but I don't
see any work on that at all.

There may be a bug. It has not been well characterized in the above
mentioned thread. One poster said the problem DISAPPEARED when RAM was
fixed. That claim blows the whole premise of the claimed VIA-Promise bug.
In one part of the thread they claim that there is a fundamental hardware
problem. Yet at the same time the same folks stipulate that it only happens
in W2K. Is obvious that the original workers on the claimed issue are
shallow technically. What about KT133A mobos? As far as I can tell this
whole issue is in the category of wild claims at this point. What happens
with a FastTrak100??

So far the only thing that can be said is that Promise+KT133+W2K may a have
a bug. Any additional claims are pure crap.

The Promise Ultra100 remains the superior product in this category across
the Wintel platforms. This thread and the thread note above has taken on a
slime campaign coloring. Promise is not perfect as they had the FT100+BF6
bug.
