Delete the file C:\XBIOS.OVL and it should fix your problem. You can
also boot from floppy if you're planning to repartition/reformat. If you
used Disk Manager to partition/format, you might not be able to access
your drive after booting from floppy (or after deleting XBIOS, for that
matter).

Neil,
I had the same problem with my WD 540. Assuming that it runs
similarly, try this:
1) Boot from a floppy that has f-disk and format on it.
2) fdisk /mbr (Ontrack was kept on my Master Boot Record/Boot sector)
3) Reboot from the floppy.
4) Use fdisk to delete your old partitions. They should be NON-DOS
partitions.
5) Reboot from the floppy.
6) Use fdisk to make your new partitions (make sure that you have enabled the
LBA mode for that particular drive.
7) Reboot from the floppy.
8) Format your drive and you should be ready to go!
I think the key steps are 3, 5 and 7. You must make sure that the
old boot sector information does not stay in memory. That is why you haven't
been able to get rid of it (I think). Also, I might have steps 2 and 4
backwards, try switching them if the first doesn't work. Good luck and let
me know what happens!!

Typically though, you need to backup all of the data, boot clean (no
drivers loaded) from a floppy, then use fdisk to deleted existing partitions
and create new ones. Next use the DOS Format command for the high
level and then restore your data.
You have to remove the existing partitions because they are predicated
on the parameters that Disk Manager was suppling. Without Disk
Manager, you will have different parameters and the partitions will no
longer "make sense".

This doesn't apply to Disk Manager versions 6 or 7.

You are exactly right! Thanks for the assistance.
fdisk /mbr is listed at a net location as being able to remove the master boot
record where disk manager stores its dynamic drive info, but i could not get
the fdisk in dos 6.2 to remove dm.
i finally removed it by calling ontrack and using the unistall process of dm
per their instructions. (the uninstall feature is not listed anywhere in the
documentation - but try dm/m then alt t)
Most likely, you were not booting from a clean diskette (no drivers loaded).
When you do this, you can then delete the non-dos partition with FDisk

It's not listed in the documentation because it was a hidden feature in that
version. I would most definately NOT recommend that folks try that
indescriminately as they will get different results from different versions
of Disk Manager.
