My hard disk works very well but heads are noisy. The Acoustic
Management is certainly in Performance mode, and I want to set it to
Quiet mode.
But I cannot access to SMART and AAM functions !
My mobo is an Asus P4PE-SRL (i845PE chipset) with RAID/SATA Promise
Fast Trak 276 controller and 2 SATA connectors.
In the PDF document of my hard disk, there are an ATA commands list
with AAM support. So this hard disk is fully SMART compatible with AAM
support.
Utilities from Seagate (like Seatools) not compatible with my HDD
controller (already contacted their tech support), and Promise and
Asus cannot help me (already contacted them too).
Intel Chipset Accelerator software and IBM/Hitachi, Maxtor DOS
utilities only ATA compatibles. Latest version of Active SMART not
supported by RAID/SATA controllers (only ATA and SCSI).
I have tried to plug my HDD on an ATA connector using the Abit
Serillel adapter, but it works only with an ATA HDD->SATA, not SATA
HDD->ATA. The adapter is not bi-directionnal.
I'm looking for a tip to access to SMART commands of my hard disk. I'm
looking for an utility... help!
Thanks
Best Regards.
Modified drivers and bios for integrated RAID/SATA controllers
(Promise, HighPoint...) are available. If you have interested...

But with a SMART utility, I can only check settings, no modify them.
It is incredible that manufacturers sells new SATA HDD without tools
to configure them (and Promise, the manufacturer of my FastTrak376
RAID/SATA controller, too). And the mobo manufacturer (Asus) cannot
help me. I have already contacted the tech support of Seagate and the
reply is "no tools".
Well... I have to wait...
Err... who is Svend ? :-)

It may be me. But I do not really know what SATA is, and why it would
be different to access than an ATA disk. If it is different, it would
be difficult to make a tool without having access to a SATA disk.
Does Hitachi have a SATA disk? Then I would expect them to be the
first to provide a version of Feature Tool for this.

That's why I recommended you. You usually don't care what the chipset is where
as the manufacturers utilities usually only work with a few known chipsets.

IF they continue the IBM policy. That may not happen.

The "cuda7200" SATA documentation says:
05 H Enable advanced power management
55 H Disable read look-ahead (read cache) feature.
82 H Disable write cache
The "cuda5" SATA documentation says:
05 H Enable advanced power management
42 H Auto acoustic management
FE H Performance seek
80 H Quiet acoustic seek
55 H Disable read look-ahead (read cache) feature.
82 H Disable write cache
Indicating that there can be a difference between the two SATA models.

Introduction of the manual: "This manual describes the functional,
mechanical and interface specifications for ST3120023AS, ST380023AS,
and ST360015AS serial ATA interface drives.".
In section 2.0, Drive specifications: Drive acoutics Sound power
(bels), Idle, Quiet seek and Performance seek.
Well now go to Section 4.0 (Serial ATA (SATA) interface, sub-section
4.2 about supported ATA commands.
In 4.2.2, Set Features command : Auto acoustic management -> can set
in Performace seek or Quiet acoustic seek.
Here the link to download the manual :

So ? :-) This HDD is fully SMART commands compatible with AAM support.
There are no tools yet, to set the AAM on Seagate SATA HDD (That the
answer of the tech support of Seagate, when I have contacted them. We
had a different answer !!??).
Actualy, there are no tools which can send SMART commands to an HDD
connected on RAID/SATA controllers (Promise, Silicon Image...). That
the issue ! This is a software and not a hardware issue.
RAID/SATA controllers manufacturers must works with HDD manufacturers,
with SMART software companies, to create SMART tools to manage SATA
features.
SATA is going to replace ATA, so tools must be created !

There is a ATA pass-through ioctl introduced in NT4 that does SMART and any
other low-level configuration. If that is implemented in the driver any Win32
utility should work.
Intel did even better with the ICH5, sATA programming is register compatible
with ATA, so even DOS utilities should work.
