The drive is AKA 10.1GB Deskstar 14GXP. There is some question as to
whether IBM changed the name between what appears on their website and what
the shipping drive says on it.

Anyone got one and can tell us??

Worse than that, the PPro uses a 440FX chipset which is particularly slow
even at DMA mode 2. A Promise Ultra33 will make a DRAMATIC difference
especially with that HD.

Yep, then you'll see it fly.

I just got one just week: 10.1GB IBM 14GXP, model number IBM DTTA-351010,
the one that spins at 7200RPM. It's definitely faster than my 6.1GB
Western
Digital drive, but not as much as I had been anticipating/expecting. But
perhaps,
I need a UDMA controller to make it really fly (I'm using Pentium Pro - so
it only
supports the DMA mode 2).

Overall, I like it. It's fast, very quiet, and only runs warm - not hot.

I also got a 8GB IBM Deskstar 8 drive last week after I verified that the
10GB
drive is compatible with my Western Digital drive. Curiously, it appears
that
the 14GXP although faster, is not a lot faster than I was expecting.
Perhaps,
again, I need an UDMA controller.

There has been a question raised that possibly you could help with. Is the
correct description/name the 10.1GB IBM Deskstar 10GXP or the 10.1GB IBM
Deskstar 14GXP? What does the box, label and/or manual say??

According to the doc, it looks like IBM makes several Deskstar 14GXP models
currently:
9.1GB (clip version???), 10.1GB, 12.9GB and 14.4GB.

Also, a correction on my disk model number; it should have been IBM
DTTA-371010.

But is the name clearly Deskstar 14GXP and not Deskstar 10GXP???

I finally got mine today from an IBM authorized dealer. There was no
documentation or IBM box so there is nothing that says 10gxp or 14gxp.
However, the speed is noticeably faster than my IBM deskstar 5 6.4 gig drive.
Might and Magic 6 saved games load about 50% faster :)

Doesn't the Intel 440FX chipset use the 82371SB PIIX3 (same chip found in
the out of production 430VX and 430HX chipsets) ? Are you saying the
371SB is slow, or the 440FX's combination with the 371SB is slow? I
thought the Intel BM IDE controllers were good for their time (better than
the Via VP-1), and certainly head and shoulders above the non-BM capable
IDE in the OPTi and SiS chipsets (of that era.)
