Linksys Router will not connect to SpeedStream DSL modem

SpeedStream Ethernet DSL Modem: Efficient Networks 5360
The router cannot establish a connection to the modem.
I got the 5360 from PacBell when I signed up for their DSL
service. It worked fine when I hooked it up directly to the
PC Ethernet port. It still works fine when hooked up to the
PC Ethernet port. It also works fine when hooked up to a
Macintosh Ethernet port. So the DSL modem can be driven using
the "Enternet" drivers on the PC.
Got the BEFW11S4 a couple of days later. Despite following
the directions, it would not connect to the modem. Spent several hours
with Linksys tech support and eventually got the router to
talk to the DSL modem. All was well for a day or two.
However, after powering off the router and modem, I again could
not get the router to connect to the modem. Tried re-entering
settings, powering off router and modem in different orders,
went back to running PC directly to modem, and eventually got
the router to connect to the modem. All was well for a day or two.
However, after powering off the router and modem, repeat the
experience of the previous paragraph, except that as of yet,
I have not got the router to connect to the modem!
PacBell tech support refuses to help, saying they will sell me
a different router (at twice the price). Linksys tech support
helped me stumble around the first night but did not really help.
Some magical event just caused the connection to be made.
I use these settings in the Router's setup Web Page:
PPPoe
UserName and Password (as if from PC)
Redial every 30 seconds (also tried Connect on Demand)
Anyone seen such a problem? Any clues as to incompatibility here?

are problems. As a matter of fact, I was searching for a resolution
when I came upon your posting. Linksys admitted to me "off the
record" that there were problems specifically between the 5360 and
Linksys DSL routers. However, I until recently, installed the Linksys
DSL routers for customers using the Efficient Networks 5260 and there
have been no problems. Temporarily, the way to get around the
5360/Linksys problem is to start PPoE login immediately after
rebooting the 5360 (during POST and Sync to the CO) This usually
works. I refuse to use the Linksys product anymore primarilly because
the 5360 is junk and will not work with it. However, as soon as an
different DSL modem is used in conjunction with the Linksys routers,
there don't seem to be any problems. If you must use the shipped
5360, try an SMC DSL router. They are less expensive and containg
firewall, print server, VPN and seem to work. If you receive a
resolution from PacBell (SBC), let me know. By the way, it appears
that you are shutting down your modem/router on a regular basis. If
you leave these on, the modem/router will stay logged-in but only for
a couple of weeks or so, then you will have to repeat the PPPoE
process all over again. Good luck!!! KH
