How long do Linksys routers last?

Hello.

Is it me or do Linksys routers do not last very long? I had two
different Linksys routers (many years ago's BEFSX41 v1 and 2009's
WRT54GL v1.1 with their latest stock firmwares). BEFSX41's network
stopped loading correctly even with its internal web pages and after
reinstalling its latest firmware. WRT54GL seems to be having random and
rare wired network disconnection problems with my computers and cable
modem, so maybe it is the router. My friend's five years old Linksys WRT
router was misbehaving even with third party firmwares (both DD-WRT and
Tomato).

Do these consumer routers not last very long?

Thank you in advance. :)

I don't think ANY consumer router it designed to last too long...

I've had two WRT54G (V1.1 and V2 ... from years before they ever started
naming the linux-based model "L") that died within a year of each other,
but then again, how many pieces of electronics last 10 years of continuous
use?

I flashed both of them with DD-WRT and they died in similar ways; one
would keep getting wedged (it seemed to be running but didn't actually do
anything) ... thought it was software but that didn't wash after years on
the same firmware. Re-flashed, same problem.

The other kept resetting and reverting to factory settings. After a
reflash and 30-30-30 it would not complete powerup (morse code blinks
on the LED's) and attempts to recover by TFTP failed.

A $39 ASUS RT-N12 - an emergency buy at Micro Center - is still going
strong.

I was going to try a third party like DD-WRT, but geez it looks complex,
confusing, and risky (can brick my router easily)!

Interesting and wow, that's worse than doing the automtic two seconds
rebootings.

I just did this 30-30-30 method on Sunday evening because I only held
the physical reset button for about ten/10 seconds on 11/21/2012 1:21:11
PM PST. Its reset resulted did better and lasted almost six days without
any disconnections and reconnections, and another one over five days
later. It was better than almost daily!

We'll see how this recent longer 30-30-30 reset goes! I doubt it will
change/fix anything. :(

Wow, cheap but ASUS? I never knew they made wireless Internet routers.
Are they that good? MicroCenter is far too. I will wait until this 3.25
years Linksys WRT54GL router gets worse. The two seconds reboots aren't
too bad so far. It was just a concern that it might get worse?

Flashing DD-WRT is no more complex or dangerous than doing a firmware
upgrade, as long as you are certain of your hardware compatibility with
the code you've downloaded. Using it is just like using the original
Linksys firmware - it's modelled after it - but with many more options
that you may use .. or ignore.

The middle and high-end ASUS routers are actually pretty well regarded.
The RT-N16 is only a few dollars more and stands up quite well. They're
available everywhere online ... Amazon, eBay, you name it. I keep one on
the shelf as a spare now.
