I have a very strange problem and it's really aggrivating.

I have computerA, computerB, notebookA and notebookB.

this problem started a couple months ago when suddenly my internet
connection is gone, i can't ping the modem and all 3 lights on the modem
are solid green.

About a month ago it was doing this repeatedly where it would lose the
connection, then the modem would go through a reset cycle. it behaved
after the 4th or 5th reset. I called verizon and they did a line test
and found nothing wrong. since the modem was resetting by itself, they
said it could be the modem. i had it over 5 years so they sent me a new
one.

i got the new modem configured and everything was fine - for a couple
weeks. then the problem started again. this time i disconnect computerA
and powercycle the modem and it's fine. about 10 sec after i connect
computerA, boom! connection gone and can't ping the modem. the nic is
integrated so i went out and bought a gb card. that worked for a litle
while then boom! connection gone again. i changed cables, got a new gb
hub - after a couple weeks the problem occured again. note that after
connecting notebookA and notebookB it was fine; computerB wasn't on.

i then blew away windows on that box and loaded linux. after about 10
days or so, boom! connection gone, can't ping modem, no internet. i even
changed the gateway to an unused address and still failed. i removed
computerA, moved all my files to computerB and started using that as my
file server.

now computerA is gone, everything was working fine. then about 2 hours
ago out of nowhere boom! connection gone. now i'm really upset. i
disconnected everything and it was fine after reseting the modem. as
soon as i connected notebookA (vista), it was gone. after a half hour or
so it was working fine. on notebookB (XP) i was running vmware player
for an old windows 2000 vm and as soon as that came up, boom! internet
gone again. if i disabled the bridged network in the vm it's ok; as soon
as i connected it in vmware, it was gone.

i've replaced hardware (just about everything), changed the OS, multiple
machines...i have no idea what the hell is going on. anyone got any
ideas? this is totally aggrivating.
