I'm pretty proficient with computer hardware but I don't know anything
about error codes/beeps. I was swapping a modem in my computer and when I
turned it back on, I got one long beep followed by two short beeps.
Nothing showed on my monitor (everything just froze afer the 3 beeps)
and then about 3 seconds later, there was another beep. No hard drive
access after the last beep so I don't think it's a monitor/video card
problem. I have no clue what's wrong. I took out the modem (and every
other card except for the video card) and the same thing happened as well.
The beeps occur just as you flip the power switch.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please email me directly as I
don't always get all the usenet feeds. Thanks in advance,

John Chang

A 1- long, 2- short beep code means a video problem in an award bios. Check to make
absolutely sure that you video card is fully seated.

Beep codes depend on the BIOS manufacturer. See
www.computercraft.com/docs/beeps.html or the BIOS maker's web page. The
page www.computercraft.com/docs/pcdead.html might also be helpful. You
might have damaged the motherboard or CPU, or if you're lucky maybe just
a memory chip. If it has more than one SIMM, try removing all but one
(or two if they have to be installed in pairs, but I don't think that
applies to the latest PCs.)

Hi John,
Don't know if it's the same with all computers, but I have a Dell, and after
adding something inside I had the same ---- - - error beeps, turned out to
be, that I had touched the sound card, and after pulling it out and
replacing it the system was OKé again,
success

Did you try removing the modem? Did you have any problems seating the modem?
I have seen board contacts go bad. If removing the modem brings back online then
try installing in another slot.

I just had the identical problem with my computer. Installed a new modem,
restarted
and got one long beep and two short beeps.

I looked on the motherboard mfrs site
and found that the beep code means you have a video error and bios cannot
initialize
the video display to provide more info. This is if you have Award BIOS.

I just dont know why installing the modem would do this or how to fix it
now.

It's easy to happen. Flexing of the card may have made it lose contact in
the slot.. Pull it out and reinsert it. If that doesn't help, try the card
in another slot.I have an old 486 system with a VLB video card. I have to
reseat the video card just about any time I go into it. I also have a PCI
based system that I have to reseat the video card on occasionally. Normal
vibration and heat expansion cause the card to lose contact.
