Hi: I would like to know if I can put a 600E flip chip in my BX slot one
motherboard. I purchased a slocket adapter at my local computer shop and
they told me this would work. It is called a 370 PPGA/F-PGA Coppermine
Card. I have not purchased the chip yet since I am not sure if this is
the right approach to this issue. If this is not the right adapter for
this project, can someone recommend the appropriate slocket card to use?
Also, will this type of card adjust the voltage automatically so the
flip chip will work? There are no jumpers on this card. It look a bit
generic. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Most of the slocket cards I've seen have jumpers to set core voltage,
fsb, ppga or fc-pga. IWILL SlocketII is the most popular adapter card and
goes for about $20 US. Unless the card you purchased has automatic voltage
adjustment your cpu will probably run at the lowest available motherboard
setting of about 2 volts. The 600E usually runs at 1.65 volts +/- .05
volts. You would also need to know if your mb has the available jumper
settings to set the core ratio to 6.0. You may need to flash you bios to
get coppermine support, check with your mb manufactorer for more details.
There have been problems reported with the coppermine cpu's if you
have soundblaster live and/or voodoo 3000 in your system. Soundblaster has
posted new drivers for the coppermine (sbl9xdrv1199.zip, but problems
still are occuring) but 3dfx has not supplied revised drivers or admitted
there is a problem (intel's official answer to the problem, it's their
problem not our design). Will run games great but hang up (hard lock ups
and erratic performance) on other applications and diagnostic routines.
Others have reported that they cannot even get to post after installing a
coppermine (secc2 or fc-pga w/adapter). If you buy a coppermine, get the
cB0 S-Spec model. For the 600E, should be either SL3XJ or SL45U stamped on
the chip or on the retail box just after the xxxxxxxxxx600E. It is
certified for dual cpu use, but it appears that intel modified the chip to
eliminate many of the compatibility problems.
The older Katmai cpu series have no problems if you can find them in
stock. Visit the intel p3 newgroup, intel.microprocessors.pentium_iii to
read the numerous posts about coppermine compatibility problems/issues.
My apoligies if this seems to be a rant also, but asking a question
at intel forums seems to get you flamed unless you follow the party line.

Hope the info helps...Sci-Fi

you should mention that this means he'll be frying his cu-mine...

this is crap, as all intel cpu's since the p2-350 have fixed multipliers and
therefore don't care about jumper settings...

I am considering doing this myself, so I have done much research, and it
seems unclear whether 1.8v will significantly shorten the life of the cpu.
I have read many posts and websites that claim to be running the Cumines
with older slot 1's at 1.8v w/o problems. High overclocking ussually
requires higher voltages as well. There is supposedly a new slocket type
coming out this summer that has its own regulator, and thus will be able to
provide 1.6v even if the mboard doesn't support it.
