I am planning on purchasing a external removable drive for the PC

the first choice is the Fujitsu Magneto-Optic 230 Mb Drive
the second is the Syquest 270 Mb Drive

the problem is MO has a scsi interface so I have to buy a scsi board
What about a scsi to parallel adapter for this ? any idea

the SyQuest can have a parallel interface so I can use it on
different machine if needed and is cheaper but I am worried about
reliability

Any Comments ?
Thanks

I've got the Fujitsu and it works great. The difference in price in the
media quickly makes up for the initial price difference, I've purchased
3.5" disks for as little as 26 dollars.

I suggest waiting for the MD-Data. It holds some 107MB, blank disks cost
US$10 each, is (theoretically) available, and you could use it as a walkman.
In practice, I haven't seen a single unit out on the market. sad.

The expected retail price is about US$700.

But MD-Data uses hardware compression so you really only have (at most)
50Mb of space. If you put a lot of files that are not too compressible
(GIF, JPG, some EXE's) you'll lose a lot of space. I'd suggest going
with a SCSI SyQuset drive. I know that you have to get the SCSI card but
at least you can use it to add more hard drives, scanners, or any other
SCSI device. The SCSI version has better performance than the parallel
port versions. You could also use it with a laptop still (if you get an
external) by using one of the new PC card SCSI adapters.

No it doesn't.

The **RAW** storage space is 140 MB.

It uses non-linear compression (ATRAC) to store ***AUDIO*** and simulate
the storage of a 650 MB audio compact disc.

I'd suggest that you learn the facts about the technology before
distributing such unadulterated trash to the entire planet.

I have big problems with Data MiniDisc, but not the above.

Problem is, the transfer rate on the MD-Data disk is around 140 KB/second
(slower than some tape drives), vs. about 1-2 MB/sec for MO.

Personally, I'd wait for the next wave of faster, higher-capacity (and
possibly cheaper) MO drives to come down the pike.

Sony has a special version which is a data drive, but also plays audio
MiniDiscs - analogous to the way a CD-ROM player will also play audio
CD's.
