right now i have a 20 gig maxtor hard drive that supports umda66 and runs at
7200 rpm (my system can only support up to UMDA 33). i was just wondering
about the DMA issue. i looked in the system configurations, and DMA was not
checked. is this only for CDROms, or hard drives too? is my hard drive using
uDMA 33?? how do i check? thanks

oh yeah, this is my system configuration:
AMD K6-2 400
64 megs pc100 ram
Maxtor 20 gig umda 66, 7200rpm hard drive
FIC PA2013 Motherboard (said it supports umda33) (VIA MVP3 Chipset)
Windows 98

DMA is especially for hard drives since you access them a lot more than
CD-ROMs. Checking the "DMA" box is all you need to do. If you want to
make sure DMA is actually working, you can get a copy Winbench and run
the test that measures the CPU time taken by heavy i/o from your hard
drive. When I did this it dropped from about 60% before to only about
10% after turning DMA on. Also, now when I copy 300 megs from one hard
drive to another, the mouse does not jerk all over the place. :)

Your drive will be running at udma33 as long as your mobo supports
this.Even when using a udma66 cable your drive will only operate at the
highest setting allowed by your mobo.Try enabling dma and reboot if it
stays on it is supported if not dont worry about it.This should show up in
your bios.

i still have a problem though. i went to the system settings palce, and
checked off the DMA box, but once it reboots, the DMA box is unchecked. how
do i keep it chcecked? here is my system configuration:

-AMD K6-2 400
-64 megs pc100 ram
-Maxtor 20 gig umda 66, 7200rpm (2mb buffer, access time 9ms hard drive
(pretty sure its a Maxtor diamond max 6800 series hard drive - so the model
number 92049U6)
-FIC PA2013 Motherboard (says it supports umda33) (VIA Apollo MVP3 Chipset)
Windows 98 (not SE, but i installed the service pack. VIA's website i think
also said that for win98 i don't need to install any bus mastering drivers)

thanks alot

the thing is i ran HD Tach, and the CPU usage is really high percentage..
like around 70 percent. and also the access seems slow... like 11mbps. so i
don't nkow what is wrong. i checked my bios settings, and when the comptuer
boots up.... it says UMDA 4, and i think that is the right setting (my mobo
only supports up to umda 33)

here is my system configuration:
-AMD K6-2 400
-64 megs pc100 ram
-Maxtor 20 gig umda 66, 7200rpm (2mb buffer, access time 9ms hard drive
(pretty sure its a Maxtor diamond max 6800 series hard drive - so the model
number 92049U6)

Windows 98 (not SE, but i installed the service pack. VIA's website i think
also said that for win98 i don't need to install any bus mastering drivers)

thanks!

Check the BIOS updates for your motherboard. I had a problem with a
UDMA 66 drive where there was a bug in the BIOS which forced it to
perform down to something like a PIO mode 3 or 4. My UDMA 33 drive
worked fine. There was a flash BIOS update for my motherboard which
fixed this problem. Alternatively, Maxtor has a utility that will
change the firmware of the drive to whatever UDMA mode you want. It
didn't work for my drive which was a 13 GB DiamondMax. I had the same
problem with the DMA checkbox until I flashed my BIOS with the latest
upgrade. I had an Award BIOS but not all Award BIOS's are the same.
BIOS's are typically specific to a motherboard. I think I heard that
this was a somewhat common bug among Award BIOS's, though.
