REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
unmoderated group comp.sys.intergraph

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) on the subject of
creating an unmoderated Usenet Newsgroup, comp.sys.intergraph

RATIONALE: comp.sys.intergraph

Presently, there is an Intergraph group in the alt hierarchy,
alt.sys.intergraph is quite active with about 100 messages a week and
almost 500 subscribers to an email gateway. Having a group like this in the
alt hierarchy is a problem for several reasons:

1. Alt is often not distributed to commercial sites. Most
users of Intergraph products are in commercial organizations.
This restricts the potential audience quite significantly.

2. Alt groups seem to be considered fair game for any sort
of mindless SPAM. We've had ads for XXX rated Web sites,
white supremacists, pretty much every dumb moneymaking
scam under the sun etc. This lowers the signal/noise
ratio considerably particularly when people post
responses and flames to the article.

A second factor for considering this new newsgroup are the changes in
the USENET readership:

1. In the past there was so little traffic on alt.sys.intergraph
that it didn't matter a whole lot. The explosive growth of the
Internet has put many more Intergraph users online (the email
side of the gateway doubled in size this year (now almost 500))

2. Intergraph hardware and software products are showing up in
areas well outside the traditional Intergraph CAD domain,
products like Diskshare (NFS Server for NT) and the TDZ
Pentium based 3D workstations are used by many companies
who do not have CAD as such.

At present Intergraph specific questions show up in a scattered collection
of newsgroups. This means that people don't generally know where to go for
information about Intergraph products or to ask other users for help.

A single Intergraph newsgroup in the comp hierarchy would address all these
issues.

The next question is what should the group be called. Some have suggested
comp.cad.intergraph, I think this is a poor choice given the broad range of
hardware and software products offered by Intergraph. I think that
comp.sys.intergraph is the best place for this group as it could cover
any Intergraph related topic in much the same way other comp.sys groups
cater to specific vendors.

CHARTER: comp.sys.intergraph

As an unmoderated group, comp.sys.intergraph would be open to
topics where Intergraph products are the subject of discussion, this
would include:

1. Current and past Intergraph hardware platforms.

2. Intergraph CAD applications in the various fields such
as GIS,Mapping,Public Safety,Mechanical,Electronics,
Architecture etc.

3. Intergraph UNIX-NT interoperability tools such as PC-NFS
for NT and Diskshare for NT.

4. Intergraph 3D graphics accelerators.

5. Intergraph CLIX UNIX implementation

This is not intended to be an exhaustive list by any means,
basically anything related to any Intergraph product would be open for
discussion. On alt.sys.intergraph, commercial announcements and job posting
of interest to Intergraph users have always been considered acceptable, I
would see no reason to change this policy.

END CHARTER.

PROCEDURE:

This message initiates a discussion period to consider the creation
of a comp.sys.intergraph newsgroup. Discussion will take place
on news.groups. If discussions are made in other newsgroups, they
should always be cross-posted to news.groups.

* This is not a call for votes. Please do not attempt to vote now.
A call for votes (CFV) will be issued approximately 4 weeks after
this RFD. When the CFV is posted, there will be instructions on
how to mail your votes to the independent vote-taker.

DISTRIBUTION:

This RFD is in accordance with the Guidelines for Newsgroups
Creation, and has been cross-posted to the following relevant
newsgroups:

news.announce.newgroups news.groups, alt.sys.intergraph
comp.cad.microstation, comp.graphics.api.opengl,
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.misc, comp.infosystems.gis,
comp.os.ms-windows.nt.misc

Since this announcement will be posted in alt.sys.intergraph it will
automatically be forwarded to the Intergraph email gateway. The posting
is relevant even to email subscribers because:
1. Many email subscribers are from sites with no access to the
alt hierarchy.
2. Hopefully a comp group would get less trashy SPAM articles.
This would save all the email subscribers some time and, for
subscribers who pay by the byte for email, some money.

HOW TO VOTE:

You should send E-MAIL (posts to a newsgroup are invalid) to:

vot...@ntrs.com

Check the address before you mail your vote. Your mail message must contain
one and only one of the following vote statements for each group:

I vote YES on comp.sys.intergraph
I vote NO on comp.sys.intergraph

You can also vote ABSTAIN or CANCEL. These votes are not counted in the
results, and CANCEL removes your name from the vote listing in the result.

Names are required for this vote. The counting software will extract your name
from the mail message if your mailer is properly configured; if your mail
software does not indicate your real name, you must include the following
statement and add your name (on the same line).

Voter name:

Vote counting is automated. Failure to follow these directions may mean that
your vote does not get counted. If you do not receive an acknowledgment of
your vote within three days contact the votetaker about the problem. IT'S YOUR
RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE YOUR VOTE IS REGISTERED CORRECTLY.

If you wish to change your vote, simply vote again from the same account;
duplicate votes are resolved in favor of the most recent vote.

THIS IS NOT A SECRET VOTE. Names, addresses, and votes will be published in
a RESULTS article in the same newsgroups in which this CFV appears.

The purpose of a Usenet vote is to determine the genuine interest of persons
who would read a proposed newsgroup. Soliciting votes from disinterested
parties defeats this purpose. Please do not distribute this CFV. If you must,
direct people to the official CFV as posted to news.announce.newgroups.
Distributing pre-marked or edited copies of this CFV is vote fraud. When in
doubt, ask the votetaker.

Standard Guidelines for voting apply. One person, one vote. Votes must be
mailed directly from the voter to the votetaker. Anonymous, forwarded or proxy
votes are not valid. Votes mailed by WWW servers are considered to be
anonymous votes.
