Hi
Anyone no if this is a good or bad product.
They have it at COMPUSA for 169.00 ( There return policy is good if it
won't work with Win95) I know it may not be the best deal but I'm
looking for something dependable at a reasonable price.

Thanks
Phil

Had one for two months. Works great in Win 95. Fast and smooth so far.
Plays everything I throw at it. Has a digital audio out too, if I can
find out how to use it. Also, can mount vertically. Price is right.

I'm currently looking for this drive as well, based on pretty good
reviews by PC Pro(UK) and Computer Buyer(UK). Performs like a true 8x
drive!

Hello. I have a goldstar 8x with latest drivers, and it is FAST! There is 1 small
problem... 1 in every 10 cd's wont read. I have had a few that just revv up to speed and
then drop-off. I had to really fight to install Duke 3-d, and I can't read the Corel Beta
disk I so desperately want to install! The tech-support line had no answers, so I traded
the unit in for a new one, and have the same prob. It is a good (if noisy) unit, and maybe
the prob will be fixed soon.

Plug & Play compatible, so Win95 recognises it without any problems
(provided it is on either the primary or secondary IDE ports, I
think). Minor annoyance getting it to work in DOS mode though. I
ended up getting around this by loading the CD-ROM device driver
in my CONFIG.SYS file, and placing the MSCDEX.EXE command line in
the DOSSTART.BAT file, so if I exit to MS-DOS mode, the CD-ROM is
recognised.

Anyone know a way around the MS-DOS mode problem? I have tried using
the CTLOAD program supplied with Creative Labs, but it wouldn't work
with the Goldstart CD-ROM. I could connect the CD-ROM to the
SoundBlaster IDE port (which does work) using the SBIDE.SYS device
driver, but I'd rather have it as a slave on my primary controller.

I think this is NOT the right solution ...

R: I have gotten the ctload program to work just fine with the Goldstar 8x....just won't
read the formatting on about 1 in every 10 cd's...had to scrap it, wouldn't read Duke 3d,
or the Corel7 beta cd I have...bad news, got a toshiba!
