Since I still have Toshiba DVD-ROM drive and it works in Windows XP,
shouldn't it work in DOS boot with its old oakcdrom.sys driver? Or did
my new MSI motherboard change the rules for using IDE CD/DVD-ROM drives?
CMOS sees the drive just fine under primary master (the only IDE drive
too) and running bootable CDs, but DOS boot doesn't see it. However,
Norton Ghost 2003 DOS can see it. Am I missing something else? It has
been a while since I used DOS boot with its CD support.
The reason why I asked is I wanted to upgrade its firmware to a newer
version that is supposedly can read DVD+RWs. Somehow, the updater
doesn't see any IDE drives. I was following
http://hijacker.rpc1.org/toshiba_nolimit/#Download instructions. :( And
it looks like DOS doesn't see the drive either. Ugh!
You can see http://alpha.zimage.com/~ant/antfarm/about/computers.txt for
the primary computer specifications. Thank you in advance. :)

So I can't use my 3.5" Windows 98 boot disk and bootable PC-DOS?
Interesting. I will try XP's boot disk then.

So I tried again including XP Pro. SP3's bootable 3.5" disk (it made a
Windows ME boot disk). No go. Remember, I even tested DOS boot with
oakcdrom.sys and mscdex.exe. They didn't find my DVD-ROM drive either
which is WEIRD!!!
Someone suggested to try from Windows XP's boot CD for its recovery
console, but I can't run any executable files (update.bat, *.exe, and
*.com). Bah! What the heck? :(

This won't work since it wants pure DOS. Remember, this drive (2001?)
and flash tool (2003) are old. Also, see

I tested that 3.5" disk in VMware v4.5.3 on the same PC and it was fine:

Of course, it wasn't the same hardware (e.g., motherboard and drives).

IDE controller on the mobo.! I got its driver to work, but the old
DVD-ROM firmware upgrader still doesn't see the drive. Damnit. :(

See my 3:01 PM PST post. :) It was a DOS driver issue.

In order for DOS to see your drive and give it a drive letter, you
need to have an MSCDEX.EXE line in your autoexec.bat.
I don't know whether MSCDEX is required in order for the firmware
updater to see the drive, though.

Maybe there is another flasher program out there that would use the
current bios file? You could Google toshiba DVD firmware flasher.
Can you get a directory listing on a disk in the DVD drive in floppy
DOS? That will tell you if DOS sees it or not, I think. If not, maybe
that mscdex line Franc suggests will fix it. You'd need mscdex from the
dos you're using, of course.
Maybe you could use something like Free DOS?

I don't see how this is going to make any differences and don't have
one. I can boot 3.5" disks just fine in my internal 3.5" disk drive.

Yeah, CDs worked in. Now, need to get the firmware updater to see the
darn drive.

I finally did get the DVD-ROM drive to work under DOS. Crazy conmtroller
and needing a newer DOS driver. Now, need to get the old firmware tool
to see the drive. According to instructions, one shouldn't use the
drivers. However, I tried both methods and neither worked. :(
