I picked up a Wearnes CDD-1020 int. 10x IDE drive today, and this thing
rocks! 256k buffer, audio play buttons on the front, I always get
1400kb/sec or above, usually closer to 1500kb/sec or more (85% of the time
I'd say), seek time of around 120ms. I upgraded from a 4x CD Rom, so of
course I'm gonna be impressed, but yesterday I bought one of the Newcom 10x
drives and had nothing buy problems with it, so I took it back and picked
up this one instead. 110% better. Norton Utils for Win 95 benchmarked the
Newcom at 3.4-3.8, and the Wearnes benches at 4.8-7.0!!!

No, I'm not an employee for Wearnes, and you can buy whatever you want. I
just thought I'd share my personal experiences with this drive with others
how might be in the market for a faster drive. PC Magazine said good
things about it, and it is one kick-butt 10x IDE drive.

If you're interested in buying one, but can't find them, the Hi-Val 10x
comes with this exact drive for a much lower price usually than you would
get if it was directly from Wearnes. The Newcom came with a 10x drive made
by someone called Vision I think, at least it was on the big white sticker
on the drive, although in the Win 95 Device Manager it showed up as a 10x
Merlin drive or something.

Anyway, I am very happy with this drive, and highly recommend it if you're
thinking about buying a faster CD Rom drive.

I bought an 6X Wearnes CD_ROM but came without a driver. When I called
tech support, i was pointed to a site where i could download the
driver. However, the readme file says it is a NEC-IDE.SYS. Is this the
right driver for the Wearnes CD?

Thanks for the info.
