"Up to Missouri, down to Missouri, can't think of nothin' but Missouri"
-Michael Stipe's rendition of Route 66
John Setlik set...@canisius.edu
I was going to buy it, but when I found out that the editors,
and map generators do not work with the new levels, I decided
not to buy it, because it bothers me that Appogee made those
programs un-usable.
Marc.
Well, since Id isn't going to run the original contest and since a new
editor is available for all six episodes, why not have a map design
contest instead? Id could even package the best 5-10 missions as a new
expansion for the game and use the proceeds from that to finance the
contest.
Of course, there wouldn't be any new guards to fight in these levels...
unless someone has a guard editor??? :)

What I will never understand is why, if you were trying to prevent people
from cheating, you didn't eliminate the debug mode from version 1.1. The
new version of MapEdit didn't come out until quite recently, and the contest
would probably have been over by now anyway. If you'd gotten rid of debug
mode, there would have been no easy way for the average person to cheat.
As it was, all I had to do was invoke debug mode (after finding out the new
switch and key combo by the same easy method I used for v1.0), enter TAB-T,
and page through the sprites until I found the magic word. I hate to say
it, but the failure of the contest may have been partially your fault.

Am I the only person who has noticed that the maps for Commander Keen 4-6
are in the same format as the Wolf3d maps? Who's going to be the first
to take Bill Kirby's code and make a Keen level editor?

^^ you mean 41, of course

Did you just get an account on the net, or have you been reading this group
without our knowledge for a while? If the latter, I was just joking in that
article I wrote a few weeks ago. :-)

We just don't have the time to put the contest together and work on the
way cool new game we have planned.

Right you are. In fact the EXE was supposed to be release in an
non-unpackable, followable state. But the guy who was supposed to do that
didn't and we had to slap him.
Of course the finding the object contest was one one. We were going to
have a few. High score and low times were to be on-going contests (once
every three months).

:) We call it "CARMACIZED" after John Carmack, the author of the packing
code.

Opps.
