Major spoiler for AintheD:

I am at the very end of Alone in the Dark and know what to do, but I
don't seem to be able to do it. I have placed the talisman on the
slab by the tree and stopped the fireballs. I saved the game and proceded
to try everything. I finally gave up and read the clue to throw the light
lamp at it, but the lamp just flies right through the tree! Or if I am
in the slab screen the lamp just appears back at my feet, unlight.

Could I have missed something?? Maybe putting the talisman on the slab
and then leaving/saving and comeing back later screwed up the games login?

Does anyone have an idea?

Kevin

I did this the first time (yes the lamp was light!) and notta. The second
day I was trying everything (over and over) and it finally worked! The only
thing that I can figure out is the lamp oil was down to around 9, so it was
light, but maybe it was to low. I refueled the lamp (it was up to 61) and the
tree went up in a blaze on the next throw. I quess that it makes sense, but
boy it not really obvious.

BTW, is there any difference between playing the guy and the girl??

ps: nothing is more fun than pointing a shotgun at a sleeping ghoul
and blowing him (or her) off its chair!!! >B-) Great game, but I could
have gone for a few more megs of gameplay!

The solution is correct, but I have seen two people have the same problem
once the lantern is LIT. There _seems_ to be a bug in the program that
depends on when and where you save the game. Two people have not gotten the
tree to burn with a FULL (must have oil in it -- though it will light empty)
lantern which it lit. One person had several saves at the general point, 3
didn't work but one did.

The seems to be a problem with this. Or maybe there is some "trick" that no
one is expecting.

Anyone else have this problem?

I worked on this last night - I saved the game right after dropping the
talisman. I only had 3 units of oil left in my lamp and the green meanies
were after me. I threw the lamp at the tree and it seemed to hit it, but
then went out. I restored and tried again. Same results. It took four
tries
before the tree caught fire. It seems like you have to be facing it just
right so that you hit it square on. It might also be because I was so
nearly out of oil. This was a pain because I only had seven hit points
left before trying to get past the fireballs, and died many times
before I made it. It seems logical to me that it is difficult to light
a huge tree-thing on fire with a measley oil lamp though.

The only place I've noticed anything in the game that I would call
a bug is in the magic room, through the secret door in the library.
Facing the bookshelves opposite where the talisman is, walk into the
left corner of the bookshelves. Try "pushing" the bookshelf on its left
corner, or searching. Three times I tried this and managed to get stuck,
so that my feet seemed to be off the ground and I could walk but not
get anywhere. I could get down by pushing along the wall for quite some
time. Very weird. I assume this is a bug since there doesn't seem to be
any secret there.

Other than that, aside from a few rendering problems that I noticed now
and then, I have to say that this is an extremely well-debugged game.
Unlike Ultima 7, 7.5, UW 1, and UW2, I *never* had to restart because
of some weird crash or start a character at the beginning because
of a weird game bug. This has happened to me many times with the
Ultima games though. I think I-Motion did a tremendous job on Alone
In The Dark. It was reasonably priced too. I'd like to see a sequel!
They could supply a much larger world and improved user interface.
It seems that they spent much of the effort in this one getting the
rendering right.
