I've tried playing Ultima Underworld a couple times now, and keep
experiencing problems with it. The first time I tried to play was without
the 'uwfix' available by anonymous FTP at many sites. This fix claims to
repair all of the inventory bugs. I was happy to see this file, as the
first time I tried to play, I managed to get to the third level with no
problems. However, I opened a door, and while the door was opening I
saved my game. As soon as it finished saving, all my items disappeared.
Disgruntled, I looked for a fix via archie. I found the fix, and installed
it. I reinstalled and started over as the README file suggested. The game
worked for a few days without problems. However, today I saved my game
and a few minutes later went looking in my backpack for an item. I noticed
a few very odd items in my inventory, such as a stairway, a bloodstain and
a sign. Upon turning around, I noticed half my inventory imbedded in a wall.
Interesting feature :) I tried reloading my game and the same problem
persisted. I rebooted my computer and tried with the same results. I tried
loading an earlier game and I was missing a few items. I tried reloading
my screwed up game a few times, and one time the game crashed when I tried
going into my backpack. Has anybody had these kind of problems with this
game? I have a 386-SX with 3 megs of RAM, soundblaster and VGA. I use
Stacker and Qemm, and these are basically the only things in my config.sys
and autoexec file besides a few DOS utils like DOSKEY and a screen
speeder-upper called ZENO. Please reply through E-Mail if possible.
My address is jan...@ccu.umanitoba.ca

Thanks

RE: inventory bugs

A friend of mine had inventory bugs too, even with the inventory
fix. But I've never had any problems. Here are a few tips...

--don't use Stacker. (this is my opinion)
--don't place bags within bags
--don't carry lots of stuff. You don't NEED to carry the whole
dungeon around!
--and most important... MAKE BACKUPS OF YOUR SAVED GAMES! Make new
backups EVERY day, and keep a few backups from previous days. C'mon,
it only takes 2 minutes to backup your saved directory to disk(s).

Yes, I know that you shouldn't have to worry about placing bags within
bags, etc., but it does help if you don't.
