Simply awesome game!
My review score: 90% :P
Well I didn't care for 1 & 2 because of the insane micomanagement.
OAN.
East India trading company might be up your alley. Similar to The
latest total war expect no ground troops. Trading and naval battles.
I hope it's got a braindead AI too, otherwise it would be too much of
a challenge for poor Mario

Great podcast about HoI 3 :
http://www.gameindustry.com/podcast/item.asp?id=27
What's great about it is that's it the biggest giggling idiot fanboy
interviewer I ever listened to interviewing Johan Anderson, a Scotsman
who's credited with being the designer of HoI 3 and the Paradox
historical researcher.
Simply hilarious. The areas they put the most energy and effort in :
the map and the AI - one shudders to think what attention the rest of
the game got given the result in those 2 areas.

Methinks you have an axe to grind with this game and its developers.
What's wrong, did they call you names?
Alan
Nope, got nothing against them apart from the fact they're nuking
threads at their own forum which might warn prospective buyers about
what they'll be getting for their $50
Doing my 2 cents to counter the sort of dispicable behaviour if a bank
did it *you* would be calling it fraud. In here. So, what's your
opinion of Hearts of Iron 3 ?
Greetz,
Eddy Sterckx
LOL!!!!...now now ;)
is Paradox known for real wargames......hmm...:)
Apparently with the latest hotfix to the latest patch (1.1c?) it actually
works now, I haven't read anyone else rhapsodising about it beyond those
terms.

He is the guy who just made this "new rule" for HoI3's forum:
http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=419935
Never cared much for real-time stuff. Though I did like Europa Universalis
and still do.
Seems to be a lot of micromanaging in the game. I've played it before, but
will pass on this version.
Still fiddlin' with WitPAE, which is enough for a life-time. :)
I just got the feeling that somehow you had a past beef with HoI's
developers or someone involved in the game, is all.
I'd be suspicious too if someone were censuring posts. But it happens a
lot, and plenty of times to me.
Alan
> I just got the feeling that somehow you had a past beef with HoI's

Nope - I guess part of it is because I'm hugely disappointed by the
game. I had hoped, against better juddgement, that the "AI control"
they kept talking about would make it possible to turn over a lot of
the micro-management to the AI, in other words : make it at last a
game I could enjoy, and Zeus knows I tried desperately to like the two
previous incarnations of HoI.
So, yeah, there is some beef, but it's recent and it's entirely due to
the shoddy nature of the game they've released combined with the
"press" doing its utmost to smooth things over, to cover it up.
> I'd be suspicious too if someone were censuring posts. But it happens a
> lot, and plenty of times to me.
Happened to me a couple of times too, and the correlation between that
happening and a crappy game is almost 1.0
What happens if you then don't speak up is that the unwary purchase a
turd and may forever be turned of this thing called wargaming, leading
good developers to bleed for the sins of the bad.
Take this unhappy guy, a filthy pirate (known to the rest of the world
as a paying customer) of the SES Distant Guns game only yesterday
http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread.php?t=86986
"I'm done....it's just not worth the aggravation"
EVERY single time I try to start Jutland, I get the same old
message......
"We apologize for the inconvenience (yeah, sure) but Jutland can only
be played if an internet connection with Storm Eagle Studios has been
made within the last seven days. Please insure that your computer is
connected to the internet (well DUH!!) to allow a check for updates
and restart the game". It's more like re-install the game. Every time.
It's obnoxious, it's absurd and to think I paid for this piece of
junk.
But, oh, we don't give refunds. We'll take your money but if the
software doesn't work "because it's something with your computer",
which oddly doesn't have ANY other problems, well, tough luck
sucker. I actually hope you clowns go out of business. You
deserve no less.
If you're going to put an anti-piracy scheme on your games, at least
have the sense to use one that works and doesn't drive the PAYING
customer away.....like you did. You guys could publish the best
computer wargame in the history of the world and I won't come
anywhere near it. It's just not worth it.
And Oberfuhrer Rose, don't bother coming back at me with some
cock and bull about how great your products and your customer
service are are like you always do.....blame the customer.
I won't see it. I'm done. Anybody that buys this crap has
only themselves to blame as this situation gets worse and worse.
There was a time when the customer was always right. Sadly,
at Stormfront, those days never existed. "

Do I have an axe to grind with them ? You bet I do, wouldn't
everyone ?
Greetz,
Eddy Sterckx
Hearts of Iron 2 got the silver in our WotY election back in 2005, so
yeah, they make wargames alright.
According to the Paradox head honcho in that podcast interview I gave
the link to they're even the only company which makes strategic level
WWII wargames of that kind. If he meant "of such crappy
implementation" he was sorta right, but I don't think he meant it that
way.
Greetz,
Eddy Sterckx
LOL
Really, I can take you down in TOAW blindfolded :o)))))
I played with the demo for a few hours to test the combat AI. I played
as the Germans. I have set the Army Group C to defend the provinces at
the French border and Army Group North and South to Blitz Warsaw and
Lodz. The rest of the AI (dipl., prod. etc) is on auto too. The French
Army was able to conquer one province in SW Germany. After a few days
the Germans attacked and recaptured it and threw the French out of
Germany. At the Polish front after a few weeks, the Germans encirceled a
lot of Polish units and killed them. Not bad.
But some unknown foreign units were moving through Germany, a bug?
Maybe I will buy HOI3.5 in a few months.
Michael
> But some unknown foreign units were moving through Germany, a bug?
There's this post by a guy who played as Britain, loaded up all his
motorized divisions on ships and invaded Hamburg/Kiel or such and
marched on Berlin, easily taking it - in 1940
Maybe it was his units you spotted in your game :)
Greetz,
Eddy Sterckx
No, they came from SE and marched to NW. Maybe they are from Hungary or
Serbia.
The HQ system from HOI3 (with a better AI of course) in WitE would be nice.
Michael
Probably Mexicans. In HOI3 Mexico is known for organizing D-Day landings in
Germany when the war starts, matching Finland ability (and willingness) to
invade Albany.
Mario and his band of merry Croats ? :)
> The HQ system from HOI3 (with a better AI of course) in WitE would be nice.
Would be a first for a Grigsby game ... I agree that once you've had a
taste of a delegating mechanic it's something you wish every game had.
Greetz,
Eddy Sterckx
Well I hate it.
Takes ages for the province names to appear when you zoom in and no names at
all when you are xzoomed out. You just have no idea where in the world you
are. Id heard that they placed Stalingrad in thw wrong place so I though I
would have a look for it to see where it was and could I find it - could I
damn. I spent at least half an hour trying to find it. You just cant find
anything. And what with the complete lack of any cities showing on the map
other than the capital of each country and all the terrain looking like old
mushy peas on tarmac. And loads of soldiers heaving up and down like they
are zombies out of Sean of the Dead and endless graphs and numbers all over
the place. Just gives me a headache looking at the demo.
Forget HOI3, play EU:Rome its much better. At least until someone perhaps
releases a mod thats makes HOI3 look relatively interesting.
[snip]
Yup.
The disconnect between what every single player is saying (except the one
player), and the scores being given by the reviewers, and indeed the
comments of some of the reviewers is just plain hilarious:
8.8/10 " ... sadly, shipped out with many bugs ..."
http://www.strategyinformer.com/pc/heartsofiron3/review.html
7/8 "Excessively slow and laggy game performance ..."
http://jaguarusf.blogspot.com/2009/08/hearts-of-iron-3-review.html
8.5/10 "Where the game really falls short is in the tutorial" [Ha, sure,
that's where!]
http://au.pc.ign.com/articles/101/1013881p1.html
8.5/10 "... the artificial intelligence seems to do a superb job of smartly
carrying out your directives ..." [Hahaha! No.]
http://au.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/heartsofironiii/review.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gssummary&tag=summary;read-review
7.5/10 "Gamers can expect to spend anywhere from 40 to 80 hours per game.
This may seem a little extreme ..." [Extreeeeeme!]

And these are reviews mostly written before patches that made the game play
at all. Once again my honourable colleagues of the game reviewing industry
suck the big one.

They can't *all* be incompetent thus the next best explanation is : Ad
revenue in general is down, Paradox buys ads at these sites, this is
not a time to write the truth about a Paradox game if you want to keep
your job.
I'm only trusting reviews with regard to the content of a game, what's
in there, not with regard to how it's all implemented, so they're not
entirely useless.
But luckily for us there's an ace reviewer amongst us.
No, I'm not trying to suck up to you, because that ace reviewer
is .... Mario.
If he raves about a game, avoid it like the plague. Now, there's at
last a reviewer you can trust 100% to spot the turkeys.
Greetz,
Eddy Sterckx
I was good game reviewer but it has been long time since I wrote anything.
About HoI3, hey I am a fan! Played HoI1 and HoI2 and enjoying HoI 3. I
understand that some doesn't see this game like me. Okie Dokie.

Map is so huge, I didn't tried to even look for Stalingrad...
Started 1936 Germany and I am still early January LOL Trying to maximize
trade as I have deficit of metal, oil, rare minerals... Boy game is slow...
(not slow on my PC but slow in play)
Well, except for at least one or two :^DDD
What amazes me is that even if one wants to cheat, or if the reviewer is too
lazy to do his job, just checking the forums would be enough to see at least
what the general conensus is.
BTW, the new party line from the fanboys is that HOI3 is not a "WWII
strategy game", but "a freeform strategy game technologically set around the
WWII era". Somebody spent more money for a spin doctor than for
beta-testing.
it is huge to the point of ridicules, they should have just dropped
provinces concept all together and simply placed things on some sort of grid
with geographical coordinates, this would have made vital railroads and
bridges important targets instead of just bombing infra of the province X
and taking out a bridge would seriously hurt
what I find annoying is that 99% of the map looks copy/paste with little to
no connection to real world, entire Yugoslavia has level 70 infra, what was
the point then for Germans to guard railroad to Greece and use of mountain
division in Bosnia when there are plenty of roads >:-)
another thing I find silly is that after all this time we still don't
Yugoslav Partisans in 1944 scenario (Chetniks and Nedic regime don't have
that much impact), and no guerilla activities in NDH (beside ridiculous
party names), who are hundreds of persons who visit my site each day? none
seems to have been involved with HOI3 >:-)
> Started 1936 Germany and I am still early January LOL Trying to maximize

yep, HOI3 has turned micromanaging into nanomanaging, anyone playing Soviet
Union is risking losing his job, wife, kids, mistress... ;)
> (not slow on my PC but slow in play)
on my PC I can play Gothic 3 smoothly but HOI3 drags it self already in
1936, if I try scenarios with war going on it is barely playable
Agreed.

Well, I will have to teach my mistresses to have patience LOL

I will play Germany somehow maybe game will be more interesting later, I
have already beefed up too much tech and production and not getting much
money (ie. zero, everything comes from selling supplies) or diplomats and
spies... At least I will try to prepare for war...
Maybe that was mistake taking advices from forum and beefing up IC through
ministers, laws, etc... and now I will lack resources for industry...
I will post my progress :))
well whole point for Germany, Italy and Japan going to war was to get
resources
Yes, but I don't want to go to world war before Poland 9.39.
chicken, attack France in 1936! ;)
LOL
That would be too much...
Gosh, two month of game passed and I am still struggling to buy all
resources I need. I secured oil from Persia, Romania, Venezuela... Deficit
in iron is also almost gone. I sell supplies, energy to buy the rest. Some
of IC is going into money as well now that Graf Spee is at sea.
I made mistake that I didn't started to research some vital industry techs
right away. Interesting sado maso game.
someone would think that world existed before 1936 but truth is it was
created seven days earlier and on 1 January 1936 it was turned on ;)
> of IC is going into money as well now that Graf Spee is at sea.
> I made mistake that I didn't started to research some vital industry techs
disband your army and play as peace loving Germany, remove Adolf, become
democracy and industrial giant (no military expenditure so it should be
easy), I wonder if all other nations would gang up on you ;))
> right away. Interesting sado maso game.
I always figured you were into S&M ;)
Argh :)
Actually women are dangerous,.... they don't need whip, leather boots and so
on especially where they have pms :)
