Wargame of the Year 2013 - results

Hi,

Here's the result of War-Historical's Wargame of the Year 2013 election :

It will come as no surprise to anyone following this thread that it was a two-horse race all along, and what a race it was.

But as with any race there can be only 1 winner, so earning the Gold medal :

#1 - Command : Modern Air/Naval Operations - 101 points

This means that the very honourable second spot and the Silver goes to :

#2 - Flashpoint Campaigns : Red Storm - 86 points

As an indication of how the times change, for the first time ever a non-pc wargame made it to the medals - the Bronze goes to

#3 - Sid Meier's Ace Patrol (iPad) : 14 points

Congrats to the winners, they will get a mail / forum post from me with the unique badge designed by Daniel Lamb.

The rest of the Top 10 :

# 4 - Civil War II - 10 points
# 5 - World in Flames - 9 points
# 6 - Crusader Kings II - The Old Gods - 7 points
# 7 - Scourge of War - Brandy Station - 6 points
# 8 - Drive on Moscow (iPad) - 5 points
# 9 - Combat Mission Battle for Normandy - Market Garden - 4 points
# 9 - Command Ops : Battles for Greece - 4 points

I've now assigned every voter a number and have send the xls file to Mr. Beretta - as soon as he acknowledges receiving it I'll ask Mr. Giftzwerg to pick a lucky number, then Mr. Beretta can announce who won a free game from Slitherine/Matrix Games.

Greetz,

I confirmed to Eddy via e-mail but, just to be sure, I'll post here too: I got the results and I'm waiting for the lucky number by Mr. Giftzwerg :0)

Well, maybe Mr. Giftzwerg went to bed. I have the participants and their lucky numbers on my iPad: as soon as Mr. Giftzwerg announces the number (and I have the opportunity to check) the winner will be declared.

Eddy, don't burn me on the announcement! :D

As it happens, I'm going to bed now because I did an all-nighter to finish my latest script.

We can safely say that today I and Mr. Giftzwerg are really not in sync :D

Not sure where that comment came from but I bought and played Ace
Patrol on my PC (Steam).

What is the range? Pick a number between one and X? Find X.

it.

Ah. Should have read down-thread. OK, so I guess "42" is out.

In keeping with our modern, mobile, digital world, I just asked Google
Now, "Pick a random number between 1 and 33."

The cheerful voice replied "nineteen," and displayed "19" on my phone.

So the number is 19.

I'm usually up at 4:00 AM. But last night was the first in three weeks
when:

a) Mrs. G. was not working.
b) We weren't staying in some hotel attending some holiday function.
c) There were no houseguests.
d) Neither of us was sick unto dying.

So we toasted ourselves a few times.

Right here is why I didn't vote : I'm so out of it I don't even get the basics correct anymore - I had the game noted down as being for the iPad. <sigh>

We are profoundly honored by the wargaming community's emphatic vote on our game. 2013 has been a monumental year, with the release of both Command and what is already one of our all-time favorite games (FPC-RS).

With popularity and recognition comes even more responsibility, and we are as determined as ever to measure up to the community's expectations from the game and ourselves.

Thank you.

While we're waiting for Mr Beretta to finish his beauty sleep here's some more or less interesting stats :

15 people voted for both Command and Flashpoint
8 people voted for Command, but not Flashpoint
7 people voted for Flashpoint, but not for Command
3 people voted for neither

So a pretty high consensus on what games were best of class this year, Command is essence winning it because more people put it higher on their list than Flashpoint.

AFAIK this was the closest vote ever - the previous record-holder was when Battles from the Bulge beat out War in the East by 21 points back in 2010.

This was also the first year a Command Ops game didn't get a medal.

Number 19. And the Award... er... Prize goes to

Frank E

...Who, for the curious, voted:

1. Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm
2. Alea Jacta Est - Birth of Rome
3. Crusader Kings II: The Old Gods

This year we lost Tom Clancy. I personally feel appropriate that the two "runavay horses" belong to the genre he loved so much - and made us to love thanks to books like Red Storm Rising.

After a dry spell that spanned a few years, 2013 saw a resurgence of quality wargames. While the winners are both for PC, and won by a great margin, it is interesting to note the emergence of tablets like the iPad as an alternative to traditional platforms. Sid Meier Ace Patrol (bronze medal), the excellent conversion of Tiller Games and Panzer Corps, and Drive on Moscow could be the first signs of a new way of gaming. And, while we all hope for new, fresh games, many titles already available for PC (including this year's winners) could be easily converted and allow for a new way of gaming "on the road" (which, personally speaking, was *the* way of wargaming for me for the best part of 2013). Time will tell.

Cogratulations to the winners, to Frank E for winning the prize, and to all those who participated in the 2013 Edition. 2014 already shows to be an interesting year. The hope is that the 2014 Edition will reflect this.

See you all next year!

Well, I guess that answers the question of whether I want to go ahead

In my calculus, COMMAND eked out a win only because:

a) I like air/naval games better than Cold War ground combat.

b) It's the game I've been waiting for since tossing aside HARPOON2 as
an utter dud.

And rightly so. Been a while since we've been in the happy position of
having *two* (three, since I count ACE PATROL) excellent wargames in the
running. Usually, it's a matter of one fairly obvious choice and a
bunch of retreaded also-rans.

Nice, congrats, Frank! $80 prize ain't bad at all; enjoy Command, it's
the most fun you can have with naval warfare on the PC right now.
