Remember when Eddy used to write I was a tough reviewer because I gave
6/10 on both Guns of August and AATF ?
It ain't nothing. Now, I don't have much time to write reviews for
mags anymore. And I found my masters in the new folks writing for
PC4WAR. I let you be judge.
Preview of the mag : http://www.net4war.com/pc4war/kiosque.htm
To sum the quotations below 5 :
Turning Point Fall of Liberty : 2/10 (pros : music, original
scenario, cons : ugly, bugs, inexistent AI, bad gameplay)
HPS Gallic Wars : 4/10 (pros : lots of different units, nice 3D figs,
siege rules, cons : too confusing, bad AI, lots of bugs). The
reviewer is a real grog. He made a nice series of articles of
napoleonic strategic games like Crown of Glory. And he gave HPS ACW
Antietam a pretty nice 8/10.
Flyboys Squadron : 4/10 (pros : original setup, price, good simulation
of flight and damge, cons : inexistent solo mode, graphics, sound,
doubtful historicity). By the simulation specialist of the mag.
Harpoon Commander's Edition : 4/10 (pros : technical accuracy,
efficient system, cons : terrible UI, tools not modular). The
reviewer is also a big wargame fans, especially real time : Close
Combat, COTA, etc...
None of the quotations are stellar this month. Mostly 7/10. In fact
HPS Antietam and Nintendo Advance Wars got the best score of 8/10.
Even a big war machine like CC 3 only gets 6/10.
Tough guys those frenchies. :-)
JeF.
Agreed, it was terrible. I covered this for my magazine, but I was glad that
another guy did the review. I don't remember the score but it was very very
low.

Uh? I'm really curious to read this one: the UI is not only just fine: IMHO
it stands as one of the truly examples of genius in the history of game UIs.
Tactical *and* operational windows on the same screen, with the possibility
to fluidly pass from the global perspective to the single tactical
engagement. I.e. a way to manage both the "campaign" and the single
engagements ant the same time: something that used the capabilities of the
PC to manage what, using the pen & the paper version, was a nightmare. And
it was from the late '80s.

That's more than I would give Flyboys Squadron so they aren't that mean. I
would only give it 2/10.
When I said "tough", I didn't solely mean the final score, I meant the
no-nonsense, take no prisoners approach, coldly enumerate the good and
the bad things about the game. It contrasts a bit with your writing
style in here so I was a bit surprised at first.

To be fair, neither CyberStratège and PC4War are pulling any punches
when it comes to giving low scores and crushing reviews. Probably all
due the the competition between both mags being pretty sharp.

I never read your review of AATF, but I would like to. Could you post
a link?

It was published in a French paper mag - I could scan it, but I think
it would be easier for JeF to mail the original text to you.
If you have trouble with French we'll translate the juicier bits :)

Perhaps I should be fore-armed. What are the French words for "crap"
and "shovel-ware"? :)

I think it's "l'method Anglais" isn't it? <g>

No worries, it's just that JeF TheGamer is much more forgiven than JeF
TheReviewer - which is probably as it should be.
I'll count the number of variants on "Merde" tonight to see how less
forgiven he is :)

I tracked down this which shows you the layout and such of the review

I wouldn't bet a Euro on that.
JeF TheGamer thought : "I can't stand it anymore. Why am I loosing
time on this ?"
JeF TheReviewer had to come back to test several scenarios and find
*real* arguments to put on paper.
Eddy, thanks for the link. Now, I can't hide :-)
Pat (If I can call you Pat), I'm ready to send you the full bit,
provided I find it back and I find some time tonight. Not sure what
will be the most problematic.
Maybe I'll post the exec summary here as well, so that you'll all have
a more detailed view than 5.5 out of 10, which is a very reducted view
of a game that has its merits.
Cheers,
JeF.
