But a funny thing happened, and we actually "graduated" from school.
I haven't played a lot of multiplayer FPS since.
What's the most fun, and most well-established, FPS multiplayer these
days? I'm guessing that the most technologically advanced game is
probably Unreal II... but I keep hearing words like "generic" or
"boring" or "derivative" when it comes to that game. I never could
get into the original UnReal, so I don't know how well I'd like Unreal
II. Counterstrike sounds a bit more fun; but isn't it a bit
anticlimactic for me to re-enter the multiplayer FPS arena after a
6-year absense... only to play a game using the same engine as Quake
II from 1997?
Incidentally, what's the best multiplayer RTS around these days? By
"best" I mean fun AND well-established. There's nothing more
disappointing than an empty multiplayer lobby for an online game. The
last RTS multiplayer game I wasted my life on was StarCraft: Broodwar
in '97. I tried Warcraft III last year, but I just couldn't get into
it.
Maybe games aren't as much fun now as they were in '97. (Or maybe I
just need to go back to college)
I usually have no problems finding a good pinging server with a lot of people playing
(20-25) Battlefield 1942, and it's two expansion packs, and all the free maps that have
been released. And it is a lot fun, though slower paced than some of the Unreals and
Quakes, but a lot more team-based and tactical.
I second the vote for Battlefield 1942. I played that a lot. Best ever.
Yeah '97 was a magical multiplayer gaming year for me as well. They finally
wired our dorms up with net access and holy shit it was incredible tasting a
fast connection for the first time. Quake2 CTF, LMCTF, Warcraft 2, and
Starcraft brought many hours of enjoyment in both LAN style play and over
the Internet. GPA suffered a bit too :}
Call of Duty is a lot of fun on a LAN or private (clan) server. Too
much cheating on public servers. Not quite as realistic as
Counterstrike but a lot of fun with 10+ people in a game, esepecially
in team deathmatch. Some incredible battles. Main problem is it's a
bit too much like Quake (hand-eye coordination rules) though this week
there is apparently a patch to reduce the effetiveness of
bunny-hopping, which should help.
Joe
What? For sniping pussies? I really don't know.
I am going to put in a vote for Battlefiled 1942 as well. It's a great mix
of action and tactical and teamplay is superb.

You missed 3 things since 1997. 1) Quake 3. Still the best for
straight up Deathmatch and the CTF is good too. 2) The Halflife
Counterstrike wave that hit it's high mark about 2001 and is receeding
but still around. Day of Defeat and now the Medal of
Honors/Battlefield 1942 realistic style are heirs to it. If you're a
camper with the rail gun, you will love Counterstrike and it's ilk.
Thankfully new games in that sub-genre are discarding the icky Quake 2
engine 3) Unreal Tournament 2003. The most aesthetic FPS out there,
it's still not as tight as Quake 3, but it's an awesome game.
