Hi,

I`m on my 4th or 5th attempt at this level (peaceful) and am gradually
getting there. I suspect a lot of people had or are having else had the
same problem, it`s my level of Prosperity that I`m having trouble
raising.

I`m finding that the further from the farming area that I build housing
zones, the more awkward it is to get food, i.e. wheat and meat, to the
granaries that are supposed to be supplying the markets of those housing
zones. The granaries nearest the farms are obviously bulging with
produce, but the ones furthest away have hardly any, and the houses
won`t evolve because of a lack of food. It is particularly frustrating
as the areas are in places separated only by a thin line of impassable
rocks. It`s a shame the designers didn`t allow us to have Roman
engineers to dig roads through these rocky areas - an idea for future
expansion packs, David Lester?

Can anyone out there who has been sucessful at this level please give me
some tips on the placing of granaries, etc, and what setting they should
be on, in order to get foodstuff from one end of the chain to the other.

Also, is there a site anywhere that people have posted saved positions
to?

Any help/tips, whatever, would be appreciated.

My situation improved slightly when i set my furthest
granaries to "getting food" but it was still a struggle.
I tHINK THE KEY MAYBE TO TRY AND KEEP THE POPULATION AS NEAR AS POSSIBLE
When you have reached 5000 pop start slowly deleting the problem area
housing. This must be done very slowly though as not to upset the balance

Hi Larry,
try placing several granaries near your distant housing set to getting food.
One granary is not enough as it takes too long for the single pusher to make
it. Also, make sure you are vastly overproducing food, eventually your
granaries will fill. (It takes some time for the "supply pipe" to fill.)

I've also found it usefull to have 2 or more granaries on accepting near the
farms so that if multiple pushers from the getting granaries arrive they'll
have another close granary to get a decent supply from. eg:

ffG(a) G(g)G(g) M hhhh
-------------------------------------------------
ffG(a) G(g)G(g) M hhhh

f Farm
G(a) Granary on "accepting"
G(g) Granary on "getting'
M Market
h housing

Eventually the G(g) granaries will be able to keep up with the demand of a
quite large housing area.

That's good advice Alan, but in this case the distance from the main
farming area to the open area close to the "entry stairs" is so large that
two granaries won't be enough. And the small farmland on the island doesn't
produce nearly enough food. I have the same problem as Larry. I built my
first housing area on the open space just south of the entry stairs and
have had problems feeding it all the time. By now I have difficulty finding
room for more "getting" granaries in the vicinity of those houses. I would
like to avoid a restart, but I may have to - I would then try building my
first main city area on the first island instead, closer to the food, and
the other area(s) around the natives once I had them pacified and got rid
of those "wolves".

I feel like I'm fighting the game design here instead of having fun solving
an "acceptable" challenge. Yes I know - the difference between the two is
subtle.

Set your remote granaries on 'Getting Goods'. They'll go get up to
800 units of food on each trip, but it's slow. Some here have pointed
out that it's a good idea to have at least one 'accepting' granary
near your farms for each type of food. This is because your cart
pushers will only get one type on each load, so you want to make sure
they get a full cart every time.

There's only so much you can do, though, so keep your housing as close
to the source of food as possible. The farther away your 'getting'
granaries are, the longer it takes for them to get food, so the more
granaries you need, using more labor.

I'm planning to put some of mine on the web; I'll post something here
when I do.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your advice, I restarted the level and built granaries
much closer together and it worked. Am now on Aedile (peaceful - I`m a
coward who is very reluctant to try the dangerous provinces...yet!)
level and am already fed up with putting out fires in my city:-(

I found the military scenarios easier than the peacefull ones! Mostly
because you get a lower requirements to win, other than the "kill all the
heathen scum" requirement that is.

Military ones are _so_ much easier if you get Mars on your side straight
away. His spirit will generally take care of the first attack giving you
that much more time to get wall and legions organised.

Actually I like dangerous scenarios better. Lower requirements and the fun
of strategically placing my troops. Procurator was the first peaceful one I
chose, because I didn't like the desert environment of the dangerous
scenario. I don't think I can stand having to inefficiently overuse prefs
and fountains in the dry desert, and still have to worry about fighting off
the enemies. Too many laborers dedicated to water and prefects make it hard
for my style of building.

Hi,

I've been poking around a few web sites, read the readme, etc, and like
you am on the peaceful procurator level (1st time through).

"Getting" is designed specifically for transporting material across vast
expanses of map. I think that if you hold this idea in your mind the
conceptual difficulties around granaries diminish. The further from
source the requirement is, the more granaries you need at the delivery
point, set to getting. Granaries get 8 units of material at a time.
Warehouses get four. I haven't verified these numbers yet. I *think*
granaries only get from granaries, and warehouses only get from
warehouses.

Also *do not* set granaries distant from farms to accept - its
apparently very, very inefficient.

I noticed somewhere that raising wages above Rome's level increases
prosperity (calculated once per year?).

There is a site with all the starting positions, but I forgot its name
(caesar3.gamesheaven.com), however it has been mentioned several times
here.

Hope it helps.
