Ok, I've managed to get to the point in JA where I am out of capacity at
the base's processing plant, and I need to take another one. "Great",
says I, "I'll just send in some Mercs".

I hate to admit it but I've re-played that mission about 5 times, and
lost the plant every time. They sabotage it.

The first time, Snake saw a guard, but the guard saw him too, and ran
off. Shortly thereafter the plant blows to kingdom come.

Ok, next time I am more careful. Snake on point; Hector, Wolf, and
Leech trailing. Everyone in cammo and sneaking around. Snake sees a
guard. Leech has a silenced 9mm. He sneaks up and pops the guard from
behind a bush. Guard never knows what hit him and goes down in one
turn.

Later, find another guard who runs off before anyone can tap him, and
the place blows sky high. Ok, replay... be even more careful. Hector
does one guard with a knife, Leech another with two rounds from the
silenced 9mm, and neither guard lives for long after he's found (one
practically *stepped* on Hector as part of his patrol). I figure no
other guards should have heard anything (knife & silenced 9mm). Still,
a few turns later, the place blows sky high.

Can you prevent it? This is the 1st mission I'm absolutely stuck on (on
Normal difficulty). I suppose I could take more mercs in, but I can't
*afford* to. I'm just scraping by as it is, and my best merc (Ivan) got
bloody in the last mission and is under doctors orders to stay in bed.

Bloody cool game though.

In order to prevent sabotage, you have to use silencers and
stealth effectively. I was never successful at it, but I usually can
afford to wait 2-3 days until the natives fix the plant. (Jack will
inform you when it's done).
So, the bottom line is: Don't Panic! The plant will be up and
running in a few days if it's sabotaged.

I took this one the third time I tried.

The first time I played that sector, the guard towards the south saw me. I
wasn't able to take him out during my turn, so... Next thing I know, I
hear the all-too familiar sound of something blowing up.
I hit the Insert key to check the layout and find out that its the
factory... Didn't want that to happen, soooo I conveniently restarted the
mission...

Again, I entered the sector from the south. I used the first bungalow as
cover. I sent the mercs up towards the plant, using the bushes as cover.
I had the two mercs equipped with Silencers (Ivan and Snake) lead the
group. Everyone moved very slowly, as I attempted to have them sneak up
to the plant. A few turns out, as Ivan and Snake are crouching behind
some bushes, the previously mentioned guard from the south steps out (Ivan
spots him). I have Ivan plug him 2-3 times, and crouch back down. All
three silenced shots hit the man. The guard's in critical condition, but
not down. Fortunately, it's still my turn. Snake rises up from behind a
bush. The guard takes a silenced .45 bullet and goes down. Next turn. the
plant's still there. Whew.

I always thought that this particular guard was the key. After that, I
proceeded to go (with Ivan and Wolf) into the factory, and eventually sent
the other two (Snake and Hector) across the water. I _was_ spotted
afterwards, but the factory didn't blow up. Good thing too, as I had two
mercs standing at ground zero...

Hmmmm... BTW, I'm playing on Normal.

Gee, which plant are you guys talking about? I got my second plant
w/o an explosion of any kind- it was about day 7 of a "normal"
game; I went for the one near brenda's lab; in fact Im not sure but I may
have swum over there from Brenda's place.
I think I may have broken down and taken Speck along for a total of 6
instead of my usual complement of 5- I always leave beth home to take
care of whoever is huritng worse (that way I dont have to listen to her )
and then have 4 fighters plus Fox as the combat team.

The processing plant near Brenda's lab has two detonators for the
explosives that blow up the plant. I found this out by accident when
I was blitzing the plant. I blew open a door and walked into a small
room (NE part of the building), then I ran out of TU. During the
enemies turn, I saw a guard come into the room, run around my guards
and fiddle with something on the wall. Seconds later, *BOOM*. In
a similar situation I found the second switch for the explosives
(I believe around the S door of the plant.) On replay, I simply
rushed the building from two sides, and planted one of my mercs
in front of the switches. The guards would come out to blow up the
plant, and be met with bullets from my team. Works on all the other
processing plants as well.

This may be true for that plant. It's the only one I took without suffering
sabotage. Silencers and then a quick strike from both doors was my preferred
method. However, at the other plants, I had the last enemy surrounded in a
clearing _outside_ of any building and he still managed to sabotage the plant.
I never did find his radio transmitter detonater :-). The first plant may
have designated trigger points but the other two can be sabotaged by any enemy
from anywhere on the screen. That was my experience on "normal" anyway.
Haven't gotten to any plants on "harder" yet.

You can tell that you have a great game when your screaming the
hell at the monitor because one of your mercenary runs off with your
money. I had Smoke, THE BASTARD, find the secret treasure, which he did
with no problem. Since the rest of my mercs were packed with other
stuff, I just had him hold the money for the day. At the end of the
day, I was feeling great! I had just taken over 3 sectors without any
of my men getting hurt, and I found $3000. Damn I'm good! What? Smoke
has something to say me?......

I don't remeber much after that. I think I fainted for a minute or two.
All I remembered was Smoke....money....vacation....girls. When I put
everything together, I near put my fist into the monitor. I invent
words that would have put gangster rappers to shame.

But now that I collected myself and downed a bottle of whiskey, plan to
hire Smokey back. "Hire him back?!", you say. Sure. After his vacation,
I'll tell him there is no hard feelings and I need an expert in
explosive. When he arrives the next day, I'll treat him to a hearty
breakfast. Then, I'll explain to him that he needs to swim to an island
were there is a couple fo crates he needs to open. Oh, and to cover his
back will be Snake, Tex, Gunther, and It. Once he is in the middle of
the river, I'll have Snake yell, "Hey Smoke, I hope this was worth you
two week vacation." BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! Each one of my loyal men take
one shot at the scumbag and slowly I watch him drown! What's that? Oh,
a pythan rap itself around old Smokey. How cute :)

Well I have two weeks before that happen. Now that I thought about it,
his painful death is worth $3000 :)

I think you're right.

I finally managed to take the plant without them blowing it up. You
just have to be careful, and stealth helps a lot. I gave everyone
silenced weapons and was very careful to drop any guards as soon as they
saw my mercs. Finally got the plant. Now if those rent-a-guards can
just keep it for me :-)

Well, I spent half an evening fooling with this scenario, and finally
figured out what was going on. The key is the building on the island
at the NE part of the sector. You enter the building from the south,
and the northern part of it is a separate padlocked room. When I
played, there was a guard locked in the padlocked room, but YMMV.
(There is a key to the padlock in the small building to the SW, but
that's another story.)

Anyway, after having the plant blow up on me zillions of times, I
happened to have Tex & It in this building at the time. I had just
blown away the southern guards yet again. Imagine my surprise when
a guard teleports out of the locked room, runs right by Tex, and
fiddles around in the NW corner of the southern room! Boom...boom...
boom... I restored a saved game, and had Fidel look at the blank
wall in this corner. Sure enough, he found a 'useless' detonator.
(Sure worked well for the guard, though...) After that, I cleared
the sector easily. I watched the guard teleport out, run to the
corner, fiddle around, and accomplish nothing. Then I had Tex dispose
of him like a lone prarie dog...

Hope this helps

I have a couple of questions:

1. I have seen many references to explosives and blowing open doors.
My question is where do you find the explosives. I have Fidel who comes
with 3 detonators and I've found other detonators but I've never found
explosives.

2. I've seen references to silencers especially in regards to this
mission. I've never come across any silencers.

3. What attribute is necessary for the metal detector. My guess
would be wisdom but I'm not certain. I've never found anything
with the detector not even the landmines I knew were there.

As an aside, how many people have been caught in a building
that explodes when the trips are hit near the shotgun. Great
game!!!

You will. Check every crate.

You will. Check every crate. Sound familiar? :-) Telling you the exact
sector would be a crime but at least one silencer is in a sector near
the processing plant.

Explosives in the attribute you need. Guys like Smoke and Fidel find
land mines easily.

You find them all over. Often they are in crates that are wired to explode.

I found one right at the start and LOTS later. It was in one of the
sectors within 2 of the home base.

You need an explosives expert to use a metal detector. The first game
I played Fidel never missed anything.

I was caught a few times when bridges blew (and managed to run off 2
bridges while they were going up in flames...)

Either shoot at it or use lockpick or grenades.

I have found explosives by defusing bombs; Fidel is good at this of
course but early on Smoke is good value (if you can wait 2 days to hire
him). I think there is a big red stick of TNT in the left-hand sector
of the lake above the starting point. I certainly have it in a save game
after that sector, which I took by heading left and up from the start.

I got one off a guard in that sector, or possibly the one to the right
(the other half of the lake). It was in poor condition though.

**SPOILER: ...... you'll have to take both these sectors to secure the
water supply which is the second subplot mission.

The manual says it is explosives.
