However what annoys me is that you can't copy the music or videos from CD
to the HD, because it means there's a delay when the CD spins up
everytime the music changes or a video plays.
Does anyone have an idea if it is in fact possible to copy them over. I
don't mind playing with the CD for copy protection, but I'd like it to be
accessed as little as possible.
What's weird is that the .wav files that make up the music refuse to play
in any other program but 1602 AD. They must be using some weird
encoding, because otherwise I'd just throw them in the winamp playlist
and turn off both music and videos in the game...

Turn off music and videos in-game.
Edit HKEY_CURRENT_USER//Software//Anno 1602 (or whatever) to change
the key CDROM_DIR to point to the local drive.
These do not work in earlier (primarily European) versions, but are
supposed to work in the US version. There is no way I know to copy
both. The videos are not critical to the game, and the music is always
something extra. The original music can be found towards the bottom of
http://www.bomibomanns.de/ANNOTunes/ in .wav format, so that *might*
be a way to get the music back by playing it in from outside of the
game (no idea if that is possible).
I happen to like them though :)

I had already tried that, but since you implied that it should work, I
tried again. At first, I copied the "Anno 1602" directory from the CD to
the install directory on the HD, but that didn't work. I set the
registry key to that directory, but it didn't find the music or videos.
This time I copied that folder to the d:\ folder, and that worked.
