When my wife and I play HOMM3 Hotseat, every time we load a saved game, we
have to re-enter our names. This can be quite annoying in tough
situations where we would like to re-play a battle or something. The
first player's name is always whatever was set in the single-player
scenario, and the second player's name is always blank. Annoying!

Also you will still have to make sure the right name is associated with
the right position when restoring saved games.

You can save the first player name by entering the player name on
the type of multiplayer selection screen, before you go to hot seat.
You then enter other name(s) for other players on the hotseat
selection screen.

It isn't hard to do, as you can change which player is assigned to
which side.
But I'd like to be able to save a customized town name, or something
to let me know WHO was playing that side, for when I resume a game
after a long break. There are times I'll start a game with friends,
then not see them again for a few weeks, and it is hard to remember
who was playing each side. If I could simply name my town
distinctively, it would be easy to figure out (or even, renaming my
hero). As it is, I list all player names in the saved game file, in
"flag order", which is OK, but not quite as intuitive.
