I can't seem to get the trade ship to work. I was playing mission three
of the romans. I wanted to start mining ore in my northern colony but
couldn't get a grain farm to start my food industry. Looking around I
notice that my first colony has an extra scythe laying on the ground.
I built a landing dock/loading dock, whatever, and a trade ship. I could
not get anyone to put the scythe on the ship. I set way points. I put
out a dock. Nothing seems to do anything.

The online help was very sketchy on the subject.

Can anyone explain how to use them?

I had a number of goes at this mission and in the end I found I didn`t
need to use the northern island at all. Don`t bother with grain farms,
etc, just use fishermen. Unlike the other Settlers games, these ones
don`t run out of fish - well, at least they haven`t yet in any game I`ve
played.

BTW, I would`ve thought the missions would`ve got harder but two I
played yesterday were really easy, once you suss out what tactics to
use.

Well I ended up bringing a priest up to the island and casting
heavenly gifts. Poof instant scythe. Problem solved.

Plenty of land, wood, stone, and ore on the second island. Why not have
two war industries going?

So do you know how to use trade ships?

I`ve only used one a couple of times in the whole Roman campaign, which
I completed last night. You can send stuff to an island where you have
sent pioneers to claim the land for you. Build a landing dock on your
home colony, place the dock and build a trade ship. Set your waypoints
and place your final destination just offshore of the place where you
want the stuff dropped. Click on your landing dock then click on the
selector chevron of the tool or goods you want to send to the island,
i.e. the scythe, so that just one is selected. Providing you have the
item, a carrier should take it to the dock and the trade ship should
deliver it to the island.

I have done little experimentation with this feature, but I think you
can only have one trade route per landing dock. If so, then this is a
serious flaw IMHO and puts the game way behind AOE, for example.

While we`re on the subject, I dislike the fact that you can`t load a
game without first quitting the one you`re playing, and instead of
actual game-time the saved positions record the actual time-of-day you
saved the position at! At least the saves in S2 were numbered, and you
could also resume play at your last saved position with a click of an
icon.

And as for the constant CD-swapping...AAAARGGGHHHHH!!!!!! Whoever
thought this little gem up wants shooting! I`ve read that it`s some sort
of copy protection, but it`s an absolute pain-in-the-rear as far as i am
concerned.

Sorry, rants over. Hope the above is of some help.
