I bought and installed SC2000 this weekend, so I'm a new SC2000 user though
I've played the original SimCity a lot.

The problem I have is that I can't get an airport to develop. The population
of my city was about 15,000 when I started getting the message "Citizens
Demand an Airport". I zoned a 2x2 airport, powered it, and played on.

Nothing happened in the airport zone. The newspapers started coming out
with stories about whether the mayor will listen to public pressure, etc.

Later I zoned another 2x2 airport zone, and enlarged the original to 3x3.
Still no luck. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks for your help...

The absoltue smallest size for an airport is 1 X 5 - in order to
accomodate a runway. However, I believe the readme file reccomends a
minimum of 2 X 6 or something like that. In either case, one side has to
be at least 5. And if it still won't develop - keep making it bigger. Try
surrounding the airport zoned tiles with power - try not to build power
lines directly on tiles that are airport zoned.

erm try zoning a much bigger zone, I forget exactly what the smallest allowable
is but I generally speaking go for like about 20x20 :-) Oh and the same goes
for sea ports but I personally like the look of a long thin one along the coast
line something like 30x5 is quite nice..

You have to zone an area at least five squares long for a runway.
You also have to have it at least two wide so other facilities
can develop.

Runways need to be at least 5 squares long. Thus, the minimum airport
is 2x5.

I've also found that sometimes they just won't build it for a while. If
I've got the available cash, I just zone a 5x5 airport, supply it with
power and then go back to other things. Let 'em complain. Sooner or
later an airport will spring up.

BTW - Do yourself a favor and build your airport on a plateau. The
planes will have less of a chance to fly into tall buildings.

Yeah, well, Hong Kong (the real one) has a tax rate of 15%, no sales
tax, etc, and people still complain. Wouldn't surprise me if people complained
about 5% tax.... "5% of 10mil is ermm... half a mil. WHAT?!? you want me to
give half a mil to the government? Outa yer mind, mon!"

Develop a larger zone and 'surround' it by power line. Structure won't
develope until it is powered.

Only problem I had with that was the pilots kept flying into the side
of the plateau. Blind or just no depth perception?

Actually the solution I've found to this problem is to dig a pit and put the
airport in there. I have an area about 15 X 15 squares, give or take a few.
It's accessed by a tunnel and a subway. The airport takes up about half the
area in the pit (valley, canyon, what have you). There's also a fire station
in there, a subway station, and a small commercial and industrial district.
The planes seem to crash less overall, and when they do, the fire's contained
in the valley away from my main population centers.

I did this once... worked pretty well, but I was dumb enough to build a
Stadium next to the airport, underneath the plateau, and it got destroyed.
Oh, joy.
