I made sure I did not goof in this post. The is Finland, not Norway. :)
Yeah, I am the person who had the brain misfire when writting about the
Norway scenario in PzG. Hehehe...

Finland is one tough scenario. I'd have to say the defense of Moscow is
harder. This is how I won in Finland after trying it 4 times. The
settings where Campiagn, Hard, and Balanced.

Get to the Finnish fortifications as quick as possible backed up by
artillery support. The 1st (and most) important thing you have to do is
remove the Finish artillery threat.

Put the 103rd Paratroopers into the air.
Upgrade one of the auxiliary bt-5 to a kv-1/39. (Bt-5's are useless)
Upgrade your bt-7 to a kv-1/39.
Disband your ba-10.
Build 2 kv-1/39.
Upgrade one of your conscript inf to a bridge eng.
All of this needs to be done by the end of your second turn.

Idealistically, this is the idea:
Punch only 3 holes into the Finnish Forts; one South of the 2 swamp
hexes Northeast of Summa; one East of Tali, and one right by Tailpale.
I sent 2 pieces of artillery to Tailpale, one towards Summa, and the last
3 towards Tali. The armor was used to eat losses and counterattack on the
front lines. Your best inf (Bridge Eng's) do not even come close in
comparison with the Finnish inf. Use the cav and bridge inf to attack
pillboxes.

The AUX inf purpose is plain and simple, in true Russian form
"Cannon-Fodder." Use them to draw fire from the Big Forts. I even used
them to attack the Big Forts in order to burn their ammo. Keep a full
strength conscript in replacement range of your attacking conscripts. Do
not let the conscripts die. Get it out before it bites the dust (err..
snow). With one of your bridge inf, put it to sea. It will have to be
wary of the Big Forts and patrol boats. Don't let the cruisers get smeared
by the Big Forts. The cruisers come in too handy when attacking on the
artillery East of Summa. Later, the cruisers are going to take some shells
when you need to move them up the channel towards Tali. The cruisers need
to play with 'spotting' range when assisting in the taking of Summa to
prevent drawing fire from the Big Fort South of Summa. Using the
paratroopers, you can spot and prevent the artillery from reinforcing to
it's max.

The attack East of Tali is a little tricky. Your armor should be leading
the way, with a bridge inf handy. Your need to send another bridge inf
towards towards Sortavala. I seriously doubt you can get an art unit to
Sortavala by the end of the scenario. I did not even try. Keep
prolonging your 3 art towards Tali. Make absolutely sure they do not run
out of ammo. They themselves, prevented many counterattack from the
finnish inf North of Tali. Once you get rid of the Finnish art protecting
Tali with your armor, keep your armor north of Tali to pick off any
Finnish inf which decides to move towards Tali. The Bridge inf you place
at sea (make sure it has a truck), lands all the way southwest of Tali on
the other shore. Move it to attack Tali from the Southwest.

The attack on Summa and Taipale are straightforward. Blast the defending
AT gun on the fortications, get an armor unit onto the forifications,
attack the defending art backed upped by your art. The art East of summa
should be die from the cruisers and your lone art unit. Keep your art out
of the Big Forts range. Soften up the cities with shells.

Soravala was taken in a rush. The paratrooper should be on the ground
outside of the Big Forts range. A bridge inf should be within striking
distance. Attack with the bridge inf 1st, then the paratrooper. This
should dislodge the sole defender and allow one of them to take the city
on the following turn. You will, at this time, draw fire from the Big
Fort. If the bridge inf was damaged, it could be lost at this time.

Sortavala and Tali where taken all in one turn to prevent a Finnish
counterattack.

Another person had posted that something loaded onto a truck, would draw
some of the Finnish inf from their fortifications. I think this will work
also. Just load up an aux bridge inf and get it into spotting range of the
Finnish Fortification line. I guess you could also purchase a truck for a
aux conscript intsead of wasting a bridge inf.

Prevent huge bottlenecks. The conscripts have a movement of 3. The cav's
movement is 5.

This won me the scenario. I did it again, just to make sure it really
works. It works.

Anyone else won differently?
I thought about purchasing a Fighter, but... we all know how good the Russian
airforce is. I just did not want to see a core unit wasted. I'd rather
have an AD unit.

As a non-AG player I have to ask what is a KV-1/39 ? I thought Klims
entered service only later in the war. Haven't heard of any in the
Winter war.

Does the game really call the place "Tailpale" (what a funny name if
you think about it!) or is it Your mistake? It sounds to me like it
should be TAIPALE.

For those of you interested in history, north-east of Summa village, a
place called Munasuo was the place where the Red Army broke through
Finns' main defence line between 1st - 15th February 1940.

Kv-1/39's are the best tank allowable to the Russians in this
scenario. I have very little historical knowledge on the Winter War with
Finland. Therefore, I do not know if any of these tanks saw combat in
Finland. I cannot argue for/against any historical content of this scenario.

You're correct, I did misspell Taipale. Opss.

Allied General is a strategic level simulation of WWII playable (mostly)
from the Allieds side. One can play Russian/British/Americans in a campaign
or per scenario. The Axis can only be played on a scenario by scenario basis.
Allied General is a loose game. Meaning, it does not strictly adhere to
history. The player, has the ablility to alter certain outcomes by
winning/losing scenarios in a campaign.
Allied General is fun to play. The AI is good, compared to other
strategic level WWII engines. The AI suffers a little when placed on the
offensive. As a whole, it is above-average.

According to Zaloga and Grandsen in Soviet Tanks and Combat Vehicles
of WWII, the kv-1939 was an early version armed with the L-11 gun.

Page 117- Quote: With the outbreak of the Finnish war, the
prototypes were sent North for experimental combat trials with the
20th Heavy Tank Brigade, a T-28 unit. Unquote

Apparently the results of the trial led to the KV-1 being chosen over
the SMK and T-100.

Having them be standard equipment that can be bought is probably
stretching is a bit....
