Once I get into a game, I have played for hours without a crash. But
starting the game (yes I have the patch) is a major pain in the neck. The
worst is that these bugs are known since they are described in the readme.
I am running a P3 667 MHz, 256 mb memory and a 32 mb TNT2.

When you start, the first screen freezes the cursor, and the readme says
to al-tab back to the desktop then to click on the button to get back.
Unfortunately this brings me back to a black screen. OK, the readme says
that is known too, but from here, all I can do is control-alt-delete and
hope that the quit screen comes up so I can cancel the game and get back
to the desktop. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't; when it
doesn't I have to reboot with a reset, and when it does work, I am back to
the desktop where I started. The readme says to try starting the game
without music or without sound, but in my case that does not help.

What does sometimes work (half an hour or more later) is random clicking
on the first screen despite the frozen cursor. Apparently there is
sometimes an "invisible" cursor underneath, and if I happen to click on
something I sometimes get a screen with menus and a cursor that works.
After that no problems.

The readme identifies part of the problem as having to put most of the
files in the documents folder in order to accomodate Windows XT -just
great if like me you don't have much spare space on drive C: (but I still
have 800 mb, so that is not the problem). Then they have the nerve to say
that the problem is probably caused by obsolete drivers...

HEY GUYS! Outdated drivers don't prevent the starting menu from appearing
then let the game run for six hours without crashing once you finally
accidently got it running! Get off your lazy asses and write a patch for
windows 98 that lets me get the menu screen when the game starts, OK? I
don't need updated drivers to get a frigging menu screen that doesn't
freeze up!

I'm getting fed up with spending a half hour or more starting this game
every time I want to play.

Henri,

My apologies.

We are working on trying to reproduce & fix this one right now.
The reason it is in the readme & not fixed in the initial game is that it
was never seen or successfully reproduced on any of the PC's in our office.
I believe it was observed once or twice on a QA machine, but never
reproduced there, so we were unable to fix it.

However, we are working with two or three other folks now who also have the
same problem, and we hope to be able to fix it within the next week.

thanks. If it can help, if I turn off the music from inside the game
(once I get there), I find that it is easier to start after that
(based on lmited experience). I still have to alt-tab out of the first
screen and click back in, but now it seems to work as advertised.

It's the CD copy protection that is the root of all evil. I'm having
the same trouble and cannot play the game.

Still more info: the above sometimes doesn't work, but if I turn down the
color to 16 bits I still have to alt-tab and click at random, but over the
weekend it got me into the game every time after one or two tries without
crashing and having to reboot.

We have just found and fixed the bug that required some folks to Alt-Tab
down and up at the beginning of the game. It will be in the 1.03 patch.
Thanks to the folks who helped me track this one down.

Yeah when is the patch and what is going to be fixed? Technically, I have
seen no bugs except for the occasional CTD. I am interested in seeing what
balance changes you guys have in store.
