Well, I've pulled Empire Deluxe off the shelf, and have played many a
game in the past week. My question is this: How does the computer
determine when I get to move up in rank. I am currently a Major, but I
have been so forever (it sems). Lately, when I win a game, I just get
congratulated, but no promotion. No promotion in about 12 games.
What gives? The manual doesn't say much about this.
Perhaps the difficulty of the game matters? Just for info, I typically
play a 40x40 random board, advanced game (sighting rules and exploration).
Normally, I play one or two computer opponents, alway set to expert, with
no handicaps for anyone.
Should my boards be larger in order to win and get a promotion? Do I need
to play more opponents at once? I like the small board since I can play a
quick game in a single session.
Thanks.
Thomas.

Thomas,
According to the strategy guide written by Alan Emrich promotions
are as follows:
Points Navy Army
Earned Rank Rank
0 Ensign 2nd Lieutenant
5 Lieutenant(j.g.) 1st "
25 Lieutenant Captain
100 Lieutenant Commander Major
400 Commander Lt. Col.
1000 Captain Colonel
3000 Rear Adm. (l.h.) Brigadier General
8000 Rear Adm. (u.h.) Major General
18000 Vice Admiral Lt. General
36000 Admiral General
62000 Fleet Admiral General of the Army
You earn 5 points for winning the game, 2 points for a loss, and one
for a resignation. A multiplier of 3 is added for human and expert
opponents, 2 for Standard, and one for Easy, plus 1 additional for each
ooponent greater than 2.
The example forwarded by Alan exhibits a loss in a game where you
contest against 1 human, 1 expert, 1 standard, and 2 easy ones.
The score is calculated as 2 (for losing) times the combined (3+
3+2+1+1)/5 = 2. Then add this to every player above two in the
game (4 players at 1 point each).
A special thanks should go to Alan for pointing this out!
So you have 2 times (2+4) = 12 points. Having achieved the rank
of Major, the next step being 300 points away the minimum amount
of games played (you winning every game, playing 5 experts each)
would be 8.57 or 9 games (rounding up).
Hope this helps!
Steven...

Hi Thomas,
The ranking in Empire Deluxe (ED) isn't something to be too concerned
about. Colonel is as high as you go as far as I know. Maybe someone out
there is actually a General but I ain't never run into him. I really
can't tell you how ED does it's rankings.
The AI in any of the games you have up to and including ED will just lead
you down the primed rose path of self delusion. The AI is a good trainer
to a point but after that if you start playing to beat the AI you have a
very rude awakening when you face some carbon based intelligence.
That's why the ranking system is fake.
Yeah, you need to increase the map size to get a feel for some of the
weapon systems and how to manage your production.
In my book ED boils down to who can establish a superior production base
first, so your initial exploration strategy is of prime importance.
Maybe one of the ED players in our worldwide email tourney can offer a
bit more info for you. Most of them read the message headers at least in
this news group.

I've spent quite a while looking for the emlook.zip utility on
the pages you mentioned and other popular sources. Could you
indicate a more specific place where it can be found ?

You get a certain number of points for each game you play. When you have
acquired enough points for the next level of rank, you get promoted.
You get more points for playing expert players than easy players. More
opponents get you more points per game than fewer opponents.
Winning gets you more points, than losing.
Playing a with fewer opponents means you will have to play more games to get
the same number of points as someone playing the maximum 5 opponents.
I don't know the point totals needed to gain a specific rank but it is close
to exponential.
The highest ranks are Fleet Admiral and General of the Army. It takes 64000
points to acheive this rank.
A navy Captain is the equivalent of an army Colonel and I THINK you need 400
points for that level. The next level is 1000 points and it could be that you
need 1000 points for those ranks. That level is very close to half way up the
scale.
HTH.

aye, thou get more points for the ranking system if your game includes
more players and is bigger. Also, if the computer offers to resign,
accept it - you get more points for being honourable :)

I've been stuck at Commander myself - still waiting to get the Admiral's

increases exponentially the higher you go.
